[NF] Windows permissions

Hi foxgang

Ok I understand, not really, that Microsoft controls program files because

of a few million very stupid people. It annoys me that an owner cannot have

control of his/her own machine but that's the way it is.

So.... I put my data in what would appear to be the data place. ProgramData.

And guess what, some people do not have enough rights to that either for VFP

data. Unless they make themselves admin. So thinking on what a few have said

here, I thought of using c:/company_name/program_name. But it seems that

even that may not have correct rights either. Ok not really a question, more

a sound off. It's like windows has become impossible to use thanks to the

stupid. Maybe on windows install they should ask "are you a stupid git that

downloads movies and goes to porn site" or "can we let you have control of

your own pc". Moan moan....

Got that off my chest.

Al

Well, they can't win can they. Before Vista they were getting lambasted

due to how insecure it was compared to Linux. So they lock it down and

make it quite similar to Linux, and they still get lambasted. I'd rather

have it the way it is now.

It isn't only users who have permissions problems - on my own laptop

(Win7 Home Prem) I run as Admin (OK mea culpa) but I *intermittently*

get denied access to C:\Users\Me\My Documents | My Pictures | etc.

I've noticed things like that too. Seems that admin is not admin.

I never moaned about my own machine. But it is now stupid where you can't do

anything unless you are admin.

You can give rights to the folder, just make that one public.

True but you should not have to get the user to play with rights.

Al,

when Vista first came out I followed Doug Hennig's advice on using Inno

Setup to install my applications (and data if necessary) in Program

Files. The installation does the setting of the necessary user rights

so user's don't have to mess with changing rights.

I use a "loader" from VMP that copies a file from

c:\users\public\applications\myapp\update to ...\myapp. It has worked

flawlessly for years. With Windows 8 & Windows Server 2008 it will not

copy so I have to do it manually. It doesn't give me an error message

either. Just doesn't copy.

Jeff,

I also use a loader at some sites (I don't think it's the VMP loader but

I did it so long ago I can't remember) and these sites have started

getting Windows 7 and 8 PCs over the last few years and my loader still

runs. Maybe you need to adjust the user rights in the folder that you

are copying to? I can't recall having to do anything special to get it

to work.
