Hi Everybody,
If the cars *couldn't* be operated unsafely . . .
What would it take? They all have computers already, just write some new
software. Have GPS tell the car where it is, have the clock tell it what
time, have sensors tell it the traffic and weather conditions and the
car would be limited to a safe speed, even with the pedal to the metal.
No more idiots speeding in neighborhoods or parking lots! Retrofit older
cars as a condition of issuing tags.
Why? Economy standards are causing fatalities.

Aren't you one of those who have railed against the government dictating the
rules? Now, you want to implement a whole new set of rules to get around the
current rules.

OK - U 2 gave me a REALLY GOOD Chuckle on this one!
And - of course, we need to be careful about where we go on this topic - since its getting DANGEROUSLY Close to dipping into the [OT] territory - especially since we are now getting a little political in this discussion.
Pete - I gotta say - what you wrote really DID sound good. Heck - what should be added to the mix is that EVERY Car with this new control system - should also have a built in Breathalizer - so that people should be tested before they start driving. Like - if the car even senses a HINT of Alcohol in the Air - it should refuse to move unless you do the breathalyzer test!!!

Hi Nicholas,
I don't recall broadly campaigning against "rules", but have objected to
certain rules that are unwise or unconstitutional. This however, would
pass muster on all fronts. Also, the cars/trucks would get better fuel
mileage if they couldn't speed in slow zones.

Why they even build cars that can go over 55 or 65 MPH is a mystery to
me... think how efficient/smaller/lighter an engine could be if it
only needed to generate 50 horsepower rather than 200....

You may joke on Breathalysers but its heading that way. From July, in France
you must carry two of them in the car. And it's rumoured that cars that
won't start unless you pass a test are being discussed. I don't get that as
a mate can do that for you.
I think Spain may follow with carrying them but I'm not sure about the UK.
