Has anyone tried http://duckduckgo.com as a replacement for google? I search a lot of healthcare issues and it seems

to be much better for that.

Looks nice -- Stupidly, I didn't know that Googlemonster was tailoring

your search results based on what it *thinks* you want. (Bogus, though

I understand what they are trying to do, having personally been trying

to read users' minds for the last 25 years. [that is if the phrase

"users' minds" is not self-contradictory <g>].)

I see many posts about google tailoring results based on those that result in the highest income for google. Many of the

hits that I get with http://duckduckgo.com won't even come up on google no matter how much I change the search. For

example, I read a lot of things on cms.gov, www.nhicmedicare.com and other Medicare contractors. Google obviously does

not make any money from those searches and clicks.

FWIW, I started noticing several months ago that if I searched for

certain products using Google that I would start seeing ads when using

Google the next time for that item a short time later (from minutes to

hours) and that would continue for several days. I don't think this is a

big secret...Google grooms the responses you get.

I'm disturbed that my wife and I will type the exact same query into Google, hit

"search" at the same instant, and get completely different results.

I've had good results with DDG in the past, but forgot about it I guess. Another

quiver in the toolkit!

Objective by whose standards? And who watches the watchmen?

Advertisers make their money figuring out how to game the system.

There's an entire industry of SEO ("Search Engine Optimization")

specialists whose sole purpose is to work out the optimal way to

increase search visibility. There are legitimate methods (better

structured pages and good use of keywords) and not so much (setting up

farms of fake blogs - splogs - whose links back into a target site

give it false credibility and page rank.)

Obviously I knew that it would target advertising based on my history,

but not "below the ads" content.
