Hello,
The hard drive in my laptop was failing so HP sent me another hard drive
under warranty.
They want me to send back the hard drive that was failing.
What is the best way for format or erase the drive before I send it back ?
Thanks,
Kent

CCleaner has a wipe utility.

I do either an FDisk (Windows) or GPartEd(sp?) (Linux LiveCD) on mine.

<facepalm!> Which I then follow with a format..... Doh! Which you
might not be able to do. Doh!

It's true that a failing drive is unlikely to let you write over all
the sectors, but it's better than nothing. It's not like you're
throwing it away in the trash. If you have some faith in HP, you'd
like to think they will take care of it.
Normally, I use DBAN to do multiple wipes of the drive.
Then I disassemble it with a sledge hammer.
That probably violates the warranty, though.

Re: Disassemble it with a sledge hammer... lol
Chances are if you can read from it, the average Joe at HP or the drive
manufacturer isn't going to be able to either. But I'd use every tool I
could find (short of power-tools) to wipe as much data out as I could.
I've found that a few well-placed 1/2" holes takes care of the problem too.
Although... if you're returning it for warranty replacement HP may not like
that too much.

Kent:
Back in the day when VHS/Beta was the video of choice they made a video grade bulk eraser. Not the type that you may have used for a cassette tape but the heavy duty video eraser.
If you can remove the cover to the drive and expose the platters to the bulk eraser you will find it will erase everything.
You may not need to remove the cover for this to work with a strong enough magnetic field.
If the drive is SATA us can then hook it up to a USB to SATA adapter and check it.
But a very strong magnetic field should do the trick.

Jack Skelley

I have a drive on my desk a coworker gave me... he 'archived' it by
putting about 7 .45 caliber holes in it with his semi-automatic...
I know of another guy that dropped his drive(s) into 2 feet of wet
cement... can you imagine archeologists 10,000 years from now trying to
figure out how the heck THAT computer worked??? <g>

Apart from providing a great laugh from participants in this discussion, it
reminds me how a government IT man replaced our then prime minister's pc.
(mid nineties)
He then formatted the hard drive, and it went to the usual government "for
sale/tender" store.
Oh dear
