It's true that a failing drive is unlikely to let you write over all

the sectors, but it's better than nothing. It's not like you're

throwing it away in the trash. If you have some faith in HP, you'd

like to think they will take care of it.

Normally, I use DBAN to do multiple wipes of the drive.

Then I disassemble it with a sledge hammer.

That probably violates the warranty, though.
