Chances are if you can read from it, the average Joe at HP or the drive

manufacturer isn't going to be able to either. But I'd use every tool I

could find (short of power-tools) to wipe as much data out as I could.

I've found that a few well-placed 1/2" holes takes care of the problem too.

Although... if you're returning it for warranty replacement HP may not like

that too much.

It's true that a failing drive is unlikely to let you write over all

the sectors, but it's better than nothing. It's not like you're

throwing it away in the trash. If you have some faith in HP, you'd

like to think they will take care of it.

Normally, I use DBAN to do multiple wipes of the drive.

Then I disassemble it with a sledge hammer.

That probably violates the warranty, though.
