#openstack-nova - 2023-08-15
16:08:53 dansmith I started work on making them visible and have been squashing them here: https://review.opendev.org/q/topic:reduce-lazy-loads
16:09:21 gibi dansmith: nice
16:09:37 gibi is there any specific issue we need to discuss?
16:09:37 dansmith I dunno how others feel, but I think 1 lazy load per object per service should be enough, and any time we need to lazy-load more than one thing, we probably should have pre-queried for the thing
16:09:53 gibi dansmith: in general I agree
16:10:05 gibi especially if we always do the two lazy loads unconditionally
16:10:11 dansmith so while it's not really clearly stability-related, doing this will reduce our load on rabbit, the db, and conductor which I'm sure will help gate performance
16:10:16 dansmith yeah
16:10:25 gibi I agree
16:10:41 dansmith the other gate failure I know of, which I haven't seen much since discussing with melwitt, was the ceph job seeming to hang n-cpu
16:10:52 dansmith I think she was looking at it but I don't know if there was any outcome
16:11:20 gibi OK
16:11:27 gibi thanks for the update
16:11:41 dansmith and then aside from that, plenty of small things but nothing large enough to be specifically noteworthy on its own that I know of
16:12:41 gibi I started to look into https://storage.gra.cloud.ovh.net/v1/AUTH_dcaab5e32b234d56b626f72581e3644c/zuul_opendev_logs_1fe/889992/2/gate/nova-tox-functional-py39/1fefb65/testr_results.html on Friday but no real breakthrough yet
16:12:49 dansmith cool
16:13:14 gmann one thing to note, rebuild tests have refactored which was failing more. it work on its own server now and should be less on disturbing the thing on class level server
16:13:41 gibi gmann: thanks for the heads up
16:14:04 gmann and py3.11 testing started, this is fix from frickler for nova https://review.opendev.org/c/openstack/nova/+/891256/2
16:14:21 gmann and in child patch we can see job is passing
16:14:44 gmann idea is to add py3.11 unit test job as non voting in this cycle and make it voting in next cycle
16:15:26 gibi sounds good
16:15:58 gibi I approved the bindep change now as that was simple enough :)
16:16:03 gmann thanks
16:16:13 gibi anything else about our gate?
16:16:31 gmann nothing else from me
16:17:06 gibi #topic Release Planning
16:17:15 gibi 3 weeks left until Feature Freeze
16:17:36 gibi anything to raise here?
16:18:52 gibi #topic Stable Branches
16:19:00 gibi elodilles: your turn :)
16:19:04 elodilles o7
16:19:13 elodilles there was not much activity on stable branches
16:19:33 elodilles if the gate issues did not cause any problem on stable gates, then
16:19:40 elodilles #info all stable gates should be OK
16:19:40 elodilles :)
16:19:47 elodilles #info stable branch status / gate failures tracking etherpad: https://etherpad.opendev.org/p/nova-stable-branch-ci
16:19:54 elodilles and that's all from me
16:20:30 gibi thanks
16:20:37 gibi others, any comment on stable?
16:21:26 gibi #topic Open discussion
16:21:31 gibi any other business?
16:21:49 dansmith nay
16:22:03 sean-k-mooney i havent really looked at the sabel brances in a a few weeks and no other business form me
16:22:03 elodilles -
16:22:21 gibi OK. Then thanks for joining. :)
16:22:24 gibi #endmeeting

16:22:28 elodilles thanks o/
17:01:53 sean-k-mooney kevko: i left comments on https://review.opendev.org/c/openstack/nova-specs/+/890779 but that approch will not work
17:33:04 opendevreview Dan Smith proposed openstack/nova master: WIP: Avoid lazy-loads on server create https://review.opendev.org/c/openstack/nova/+/891520
17:34:10 opendevreview Dan Smith proposed openstack/nova master: Avoid lazy-loads on server create https://review.opendev.org/c/openstack/nova/+/891520
18:12:30 dansmith gibi: another functional failure, but this looks different: https://storage.gra.cloud.ovh.net/v1/AUTH_dcaab5e32b234d56b626f72581e3644c/zuul_opendev_logs_240/889740/1/check/nova-tox-functional-py39/240dccc/testr_results.html
18:12:45 dansmith surely seems like the 3.9 job is the one we always see trouble with...
18:13:02 sean-k-mooney we coudl just test 3.8 and 3.10 :P
18:13:34 sean-k-mooney oh the db coursor thing
18:15:24 sean-k-mooney so 3.9 is runing on focal with a non default python i.e. that default to 3.8
18:15:32 dansmith yup
18:15:39 sean-k-mooney so i dont know if there could be a bug in that interperter
18:16:07 dansmith that's why I was pointing it out
18:16:25 sean-k-mooney i dont see this often but we could always try using debian for this job
18:16:32 sean-k-mooney of centos 9 stream
18:16:35 sean-k-mooney that default to 3.9
18:18:12 sean-k-mooney we woudl jsut need to suppy a diffent nodeset but im not sure if that will help or not
18:19:43 sean-k-mooney am is zuul ok at th moment
18:20:03 sean-k-mooney i pushed a patch almost 2 hours ago and its still queueed to start running
18:21:10 dansmith see the notices above?
18:21:55 sean-k-mooney oh ok
18:22:29 sean-k-mooney so there is proably a backlog
18:22:34 sean-k-mooney ill check tomorrow
21:19:32 opendevreview Dan Smith proposed openstack/nova master: Avoid lazy-loads on server create https://review.opendev.org/c/openstack/nova/+/891520

05:11:43 opendevreview Amit Uniyal proposed openstack/nova master: Removed explicit call to delete attachment https://review.opendev.org/c/openstack/nova/+/891289
07:13:34 kevko sean-k-mooney thank you, my colleguage viktor will reply today ..btw, several customers wants this feature (az-afiinity/anti-az-afinnity ) from us ...i was also discussing this with someone on summit ..i think julia kreger ..
07:29:36 opendevreview melanie witt proposed openstack/nova master: Enable use of native threads in scatter_gather_cells https://review.opendev.org/c/openstack/nova/+/650172
08:00:04 gibi dansmith: re: Cursor needed to be reset because of commit/rollback and can no longer be fetched from.: That seems fairly frequent in nova. At least there was 15 hint in the last 30 days
12:18:07 sean-k-mooney kevko: yep we have discussed it at the summit before. it could be done but not the way you suggested it requires addtional change to the api. just for context this has been disccused at at least 3 PTGs and has been rejected in the form ye preposed in the spec at least twice
12:18:24 sean-k-mooney i was not at the last pyshical summit.
12:18:53 sean-k-mooney effectivly we need a new api microversion to opt into dynamicaly selected AZ
12:19:15 sean-k-mooney we then need to ensure that when that is requested that we dont populate an az in the api
12:20:17 sean-k-mooney then we need a something likely prior to the placement query to determin what azs can be used althogh that could happen after a a filter/weigher
12:20:50 supamatt As an operator using openstack, I do concur with kevko.. this is a much needed feature when using multiple Nova AZs
12:21:42 sean-k-mooney supamatt: you reasise we declard doing this to be out of scope of nova to do the last time it was proposed as a spec
12:22:36 supamatt I saw your comments to what Ultimum was proposing
12:24:03 sean-k-mooney under the "No more Orchestration" https://docs.openstack.org/nova/latest/contributor/project-scope.html#no-more-orchestration
12:24:59 sean-k-mooney princiapl. i.e. we do not want to implement advanced orchestation supprot in nova itselsf. with that said there are less invaisve ways to enable this that might be in scope
12:26:37 sean-k-mooney supamatt: i understand why peope want this but for technial and practical reasons this is not something that could be enbled without using a new api microverion to have in my opipion
12:27:35 sean-k-mooney with the new api microversion however we could enable this feature. that microversion si opting out of the current defaulting that prevents the schduler for selecting AZs
12:27:50 supamatt I think that's a good idea.
12:29:40 sean-k-mooney i need to go to the pharmacy and pick up my blood presseur persciption so ill be afk for 30 mins or so.
12:30:02 sean-k-mooney but in general we can try evolving the spec that is propsoed to make it something that will actully work
12:30:48 sean-k-mooney that is why i did not -2 it. im not agaisnt the feature in genral jsut wanted to let kevko know that the acutal cahnge will need to be more complicated then sugested in the spec
13:30:43 dansmith gibi: ack, I hadn't seen it on any of mine in a long time
14:56:39 opendevreview Dan Smith proposed openstack/nova master: Avoid lazy-loads in resize https://review.opendev.org/c/openstack/nova/+/891605
20:40:00 opendevreview Merged openstack/nova master: Add upgrade check for compute-object-ids linkage https://review.opendev.org/c/openstack/nova/+/889740
