Good Evening All:
I have a table that belongs to a database. This table has an index file
(cdx) and an fpt.
When I try to open the table I get and error message "file is not open".
The docs say:
File is not open (Error 1113)
You have attempted to read from, or write to, a file that is not
currently open.
I suspect the user shut the box off while the table was being written to
but not sure...
How do I fix this?

Just a shot, but have you tried to VALIDATE DATABASE RECOVER ?

I really don't know what caused this to happen. And the user has no backup of
this 16MB table with its 17MB FPT.
Any other ideas?

Sounds like the header may be corrupted. If so, one of the DBF recovery
packages, like Stonefield, might fix it. You can look at the header with a
Hex editor and compare what you see to the descriptions.
At worst, you should be able to kill the byte that says its part of a DBC,
and then fix/recover it as a free table.

I usually get this error when I have a blown index.
Try renaming the .cdx file something else and re-creating it.

Sorry Jack, but I'm afraid I can't offer any other ideas. I think the other
replies are on line with what I would suggest, being that the DBC header is
corrupt in some way. This may take a commercial utility to correct. I've
never been too keen on hacking HEX codes myself.

Exactly the problem...the CDX was corrupt!
I deleted the CDX and rebuilt it and all appears ok.
Thanks to all who replied. This project is very visible in the organization and
it wasn't looking good for yours truly.
In the daze <g> of FPW/FPD I would dive right in with my hex editor and rebuild
the header. But now with DBC's I'm not so sure of myself. Being chicken is a
better part of valor...
