Greetings fellow Profoxers!
I see some external SSD drives on this page:

My laptop is a maybe 4 years old and is running out of local disk space.
I've got another laptop I can migrate to but I was thinking of just
extending and still using this one yet (because I love it) and using an
external HD would take care of my space issues...at least for now...and
give me another area to send backups.
My question: I know SSD drives are 20x faster reportedly, but would
that still apply if it's an EXTERNAL drive? I understand that using the
USB 3.0 port is better than the older USB 2.x ports and earlier for
transfer rates.

SATA 3 HD interface is rated up to 6Gbps
USB 3.0 interface is rated up to 5Gbps
Yes, using an SSD external will result in better performance than a
non-SSD, even with USB 3.0 interface in the mix.

Remember not to plug in any USB 2.x devices into a shared USB 3.0 controller because all devices will then slow to the USB 2.x speed.
Example: If you plug in a mouse beside the SSD External HD, you've just slowed down the speed of the HD.

Thanks, Mike. Sounds like an even better plan is to get the SATA 3 HD
connection. I believe my laptop has that port too.

You'd be right, just fewer to choose from (containers to hold the SSD
and provide the SATA3 HD interface.)

Mike - I upgraded my laptop with a smart hybrid drive - SSD for the OS
and frequently accessed files, and extra space for the rest.
Not as fast as a pure SSD but much cheaper and imho works well.

Personally I would just buy a replacement internal SSD and a large external HDD.
Samsungs are nice.
Clonezilla can be used to transfer your OS to the new drive.

I always used to work on the basis of 3 years for conventional desktop drives but the laptop drives seem to be much better so, depending on usage, about 5 years I guess but after that time you would probably find it to be too small anyway.
Lots of manufacturers no longer state the MTBF for drives any more as I guess it is fairly meaningless to most people.
