Because their weight doesn't matter?

Exactly. The acceleration of a train is amazing and it is done off of
battery powered electric motors.
The only way we can make any type of improvement in mpg is to reduce
the weight of the vehicle. Lighter frame, body parts, components all
around.

Could it be the train is hooked to a really long extension cord?

Hi Jerry,
All trains are "electric" think diesel-electric. And the plane is
turbine electric. There are batteries, but they are kept charged by a
turbine engine that burns on board fuel.
The "electric" trains are also powered by a generator, although it is
located on the grid somewhere rather than on board.

Freight and long distance passenger trains have diesel generators that
charge on board batteries. Been that way for 30-50 years.
