[NF] chat client for internal use only

Author: Jarvis, Matthew

I thought it would be valuable to be able to fire up a quick chat with

someone else in my department from time to time.

Our corp overseers though clock all that (don't blame them), but if I

could manage to keep the server in house and not even try to get to the

outside world, they a) won't even know about it and b) prolly couldn't

do anything about it if they did...

Anyone have something that does this?

I just tried Pidgin but can't get it to fire up, but me thinks it's

because it's trying to go out to the world and the firewall is blocking

it...

We use a pretty basic messenger from www.softros.com I don't administer it so I don't know anything below the surface - but it seems to work pretty well at about $10 per user (more users, lower per user cost).

As always, YMMV...

VFUG.org's Tom (can't recall his last name) had built a VFP chat client

that we used to discuss topics on certain meeting times. I left VFUG

long ago so you might investigate it.

As much as I would like to lay claim to a solution, I suspect my TXTing (SMS

system) is not what you're looking for.

I would love to see a small app that works a little like NET SEND and

broadcast a message to all users on the network.

I have created a system that does this but all users need to "log-in" to my

very small app 1st thing in the morning. Guess what, they don't always do

so, so when I use to ask everyone to do something, I get the grizzles, "I

didn't know about it"

This small app WAS very simple, and then I kept adding to it.......
