It is virtually impossible to surf without being tracked. Cookies have
been replaced with E-tags, Flash storage, http headers, offline
storage and a bunch of other tricks that even make "private" browsing
simple enough to track.
You can google (or duckduckgo :) for "Universal Cookie" or
"SuperCookie" whatever paranoid phrase might come to mind to find many
stories like:

On the flip side you can get a few pennies off your gas purchase if
you let the food store track your purchases.
The concept of privacy has changed so much in only 10 or more years.

I get lots of cash vouchers from Tescos here in the UK.
I save 'em up. Got £90 worth at the moment.
They can track me all they like, I'd go to that store anyway as it's local!

I buy a lot from Tesco's when I visit the UK. But I dont know what sense of
tracking me they can make. Probably think I'm running a bedding shop.
