We have installed a hot-swappable hard drive in our Win 2000 file server to
handle daily backups.
We were using Veritas Backup Exec 8.5 to back up to tapes but decided to go
with a hard drive because the tapes seem to be more problematic.
Now we're having problems getting the Veritas software to work with the new
hot swappable hard drive and we were told we needed to upgrade to ver 9.1,
but it still is not functioning.
Does any know of any another backup software that would work with a hot
swappable internal serial hard drive from Addonics (230Megs)
TIA

We use BrightStore (The old Arcserve) from CA on the same drives with no
problems using incremental Mirroring with no problems on a 2K server. It
will also backup/mirror over the LAN.

NT Backup works well with DVD-RW so should work with small hard drives.

We use Veritas to back up to network drives all the time. We did have to
call Veritas to get it all working as the manual said it should.. but once
it started.. its good..

Veritas seems a little "high strung" to me, too many moving parts involved
for it to run well for an extended period of time.
We're going to try to edit some registry settings on the server. Their tech
support seem to think there has been some corruption in the SQL data base
settings and maybe IIS (???) settings too. The idea is to set things back
to defaults as see if that helps.
We're mainly trying to just get the upgrade installed right now, then we'll
see how it works after that.

I have a friend that needs a backup system that would work similar to the
following for a Windows OS:
Plug in an external hard drive and a program will launch.
It would be nice if the program was able to determine the size of the hard
drive is greater than 4 gigabyte (or another size setting to keep from
popping up the UI)
Bring up the UI with default settings allowing the user to accept and
begin the backup or cancel.
If a custom service needs to be written to launch the backup tool, that I
can make happen.
What local backup programs are recommended?
Thanks,
Tracy

I got no responses when I sent this last week. I saw it was a busy day with
many other topics, so I thought I'd bump this email and see if I get any
responses today.

Many of the inexpensive external drives come with a button and
matching software that will run a backup when the button is pressed.

I'm not sure what you're asking here.

I was hoping we would be able to avoid purchasing another external drive.
But that is on my thoughts.

If a UI is brought up asking the user if they would like to start a backup
process. I would want to avoid this UI from being presented when a 2 gig
thumb drive is put in to the USB port. Of course, this would not be an issue
with the above mentioned drive with the button.
