I had a request from a PC guy. He said that he is getting a lot of
requests to transfer programs from older computers to new computers,
like XP to Windows7. The program will work fine on Windows7 and they
have the keys and all that, but no installation disks and they are not
available for download or the company is no longer in business.
The question is, is there a way to transfer a program and its
appropriate registry data from one computer to another? There are some
that say they do it, but are not reliable.
TIA

I know there's some programs that help migrate from one PC to another
(although I've not used them).
Don't you long for the days when everything was in a configuration file
AND THE REGISTRY DIDN'T EXIST?!?!

Those days are back for me. I'm down to five Windows programs and all
of the rest are in Ubuntu. Quickbooks, VFP, ATX Tax Software and IE to
log into corporate networks, and remote access programs that will soon
provide Linux support. Life is good. This request is for a customer.

What you are longing for is *nix. Mac or Linux.

So Linux using config files the same old way...and no registry?

Aah, saw this after I just replied to Jeff.
I don't suppose Windows will ever get rid of the registry, will they?

Well, they aren't lame .INI files either.
No registry.

For me the best option if you need to keep legacy programs working is to use
virtual machines.
Just backup with a good backup software the entire XP machine and restore it to
a VM, Microsoft VM should be fine, but you have other free options.
I use Microsoft VMs on my W7 machines an it's great!

Yep, and it's cool being able to boot to a text prompt if your system is
seriously hosed and just edit conf files to fix things. Although you
have been able to jigger the Windows Registry from a recovery mode
prompt for a while now as well, but it's not as user-friendly.
