When the logon screen pops up makes the username

What ever the administrator password is on the xp machine
Machinename above is the name of the xp machine
Or from the cmd prompt
Again is the admin password is letmein on the new machine and the new
machine is called xphome
Net use * \\xphome\c$ letmein /user:xphome\administrator

I quickly ran out and bought a brand new computer with a 3 year complete
hardware warantee. I will never build another computer again.
The BAD news, the new computer has XP Home on it!!! SHIT.
I'm trying to copy everything off of my old computer and make the new
one visible to the other 2 computers on the network. I can't figure out
how to make XP allow other computers (Especially Win2K computers) to
access it.
I've opened up EVERYTING. Turned off the firewall. Set the root of the
C: drive to share with everybody but when I try to connect from my other
computers (One Win2K the other WinXP Pro) I get the stupid log on window
on the XP Pro and no matter what I try, I can't get onto the new XP
machine.
Any ideas?

I seem to recall that XP home was intentionally crippled so as to not
allow networking. (Or was that it just can't join a PDC.
I'd say putting W2K Pro on the box is a better idea. That's what I'd do.
And then I'd lock that thing down tighter than, well, having a bunch of
17 year old girls in the house tonight for a sleepover, I'll spare the
rest of that line, but you know what I'm thinking.

Thanks for the information. To tell the truth, I've never used XP home;
because, I got the impression early on that it wouldn't network. I just
assumed it didn't have the software built-in to network, kind of like
the old one-to-a-customer MS Dos OS.

Hi Chris,
I've never used XP home, and I'm using XP Pro less and less, as I'm
moving away from windows. Using Linux gives me a much greater sense of
having power, stability, and worry free computing comfort. It's gotten
to the point where I dread booting into Windows XP Pro, because its so
big, slow, and is such a struggle to get things network and keep
everything running smoothly. Also, I find I'm under much more stress
when running windows; because, I so gun shy waiting for something to
misfire.
After using Linux to the point where you have become comfortable with
it, you will better understand what I'm trying to say.

me to access my printer on the other XP machine.
The trick is "machinename\<user name>". Wow...who would'a guessed it?

I think that would be the root cause. If you're just getting started
with Linux, then keep it simple and do it one step at a time. Installing
from CDs and getting a single stand-alone box working is the first step.
We forget that we've got years and year of experience with Windows, and
Linux' way of doing things is different, and it takes some getting used to.
Small steps first, and get them right.... Once you're comfortable with
the standalone box,then it's time for an internet/network connectin.

In order to see all of your machines, you must set up the same user account
with the same password on each PC. You should also clear the check box, "Use
Simple File Sharing", in Start/ControlPanel/FolderOptions/View.

I'm starting to get frustrated with Linux install, this maybe because I'm
trying to do a network install rather than downloading and burning all the
media.
I tried debian first, this installed fine but when I got into gnome I
couldn't even changed the desktop size without a degree.
I tried fedora next, but this didn't seem to allow network install so I
moved onto suse.
Suse initially seem so much better, but half way through the network install
(twice) the machine just rebooted.
I'm currently installed my Win2k Server disks to the same machine just to
prove to myself the machine does work.
I will probably after learning the much respected Ed, Paul and Whil are on
Fedora get that media downloaded and give that a go.
In the meantime, 100% of our clients are using either XP or 2000 as clients
and either 2000 or 2003 as the server. I cant say that I've ever had a
Microsoft network let me down in anyway. But then again we are only really
doing small (5 to 20 user) local area networks for running VFP apps.
