RE: Alternatives to Master and Slave Terminology Redux

The problem with PC is that far too many people make a lifestyle of being

'professionally uncomfortable'. They are also largely (but not entirely)

mediocrities. Our country (Australia) is a harsh land where rewards are many

but only for those willing to work hard, take risks and able to 'suck it

up'. Although it is changing sadly, political correctness is still viewed

dimly. Demanding your rights or being perpetually 'offended' by everything

is a highway to failure. You don't have to like it for it to be true. How

many of your American success stories are politically correct? Not many.

The other thing that has been noticed is that when you give up one statement

or descriptor or behaviour in the name of political correctness, it does not

end there. There is always the next target, the next criticism, the next

assault. Read Germaine Greer. Started her life out as a feminist and after

that battle was essentially won has moved on to complaining about pretty

much everything in the universe.

We criticise Islam to still seeking revenge on murders and wars from 1400

years ago. Slavery was a great evil, but it is also a very, very long time

ago. So yes, it IS time to move on and suck it up. After all, it is an IT

term, not a socio-political terminology. No one is seeking to make a

statement of any kind whatsover.

'controller and responder' has overtones of domestic violence. See how easy

it is to offend pretty much anyone who was born without a skin?

We've used "gender changers" for a long time in electronics. Pretty few

people need an explanation of what the terms mean.

As far as "political correctness" goes, that's a term used by people who

think that phrases that make other people uncomfortable is fine with them,

and other people ought to just suck it up. It's dismissive, and rude. If

you'd like to discuss further, I'd suggest we take it [OT] as it is.

"Controller' and "responder" is less fraught terminology, my partner

suggests.
