No, no, no, you're exactly right. We usually jump into the complicated

stuff, skipping over the obvious:

Is it turned on? Yes

Is it plugged in? Yes

Are the blinky lights blinking? Yes

Have you turned it on and off? Yes

(That usually solves 90% of my client support questions.)

The server has been running for a couple of years, and we are able to

connect from many machines around the office, including using the 32-bit

ODBC Manager on this trouble-making laptop. It's only the SQL Server

Management Studio that refuses to connect. I don't think it uses ODBC

drivers; I think it connects to the SQL server using Named Pipes or TCP/IP.

I need to check the connection configuration as Allen suggested.
