I agree it sounds like hardware. When it's asleep it's not doing anything so it doesn't break.

I think I'd run a memory test and a chkdsk for starters. If those check out oK then I'd look at CPU temperature.

When's the last time you opened the case and blew the dirt out of the fans? When the machine is working hard (as on a long 3d printer job) it heats up more.
