Hi Folks,

I'm seeking recommendations on good free (as in beer) Windows POP/SMTP

email clients that run on Windows 7 or later. I would like to hear from

people who have experience using the software that they are recommending.

I have always preferred Eudora, but the "real" Eudora (not the aborted

Thunderbird conversion) is no longer being produced. It does not work

reliably on Windows 7.

We can and do use Thunderbird, but in our environment, in which people

regularly use several different email accounts, the interface can be

confusing for some people. Also, it can be pretty slow while doing its

various internal processing things such as compacting, reindexing, and

processing junk mail. And it does not handle very large mailboxes well at all.

I have looked at Pegasus but it seems to me to be needlessly complex for my

purposes, and while configuration to simplify the interface (somewhat) is

possible, the tools necessary to do that are spread all over the place.

It's not a well-organized piece of software in my opinion.

I have not looked at Windows Mail, though I would consider it if I had to.

Please, don't tell me I should use IMAP instead of POP/SMTP. Also, I am not

interested in using MS Outlook or an Exchange server.

Here's what I need:

- Dead simple for the most unskilled computer users

- Handles ordinary POP3/SMTP on original standard ports (110/25) without SSL

- Can either incorporate multiple accounts in a simple interface, or can be

deployed as multiple installations on the same machine, one per account

- Does not choke on very large mailboxes (as in, 10,000 or more messages)

(I know it's ridiculous but I have people here who insist they have to keep

everything forever, and I am not allowed to argue with them)

- Allows me to turn off any preview pane

- Does not open attachments automatically

- Works cooperatively with Avast! antivirus

- Allows me to turn off executable content in email messages

- Sends attachments as attachments, NOT embedded in the message

- Sends quoted text inline, not as an attachment or "eml" file

This should be a fun opportunity for people to argue about the "best" email

client. :)
