Our Tech Support called me and asked me to replace the IE7 Beta on my loan

laptop with RC1 -

this has proved to be considerably more "challenging" than I expected:

Before I could even get to the download page I had to install the dreaded

"Genuine Advantage".

The download proceeded OK -

I then had to validate that I had a genuine copy of Windows - apparently I

do, which is nice!

The install recommended that I disable any antivirus software - I couldn't

do this (short of a full uninstall) because our corporate version of

Symantec is locked down.

The install then proceeded to the end, when it announced that it had failed

and I had to re-boot to find out why.

Apparently there are several possible reasons which may or may not include

the antivirus software:

The first solution proposed involves some medium-level editing of the

Registry (Aaargh!) - they do suggest you make a backup first (which of

course everyone knows how to do!)

If you you are unwilling to mess with the big R (which I am) it suggests

just uninstalling IE7 Beta and reverting to IE6 -

This seemed like a good idea! ©

The first problem is that IE7 Beta doesn't appear in Control Panel ->

Remove Programs - but someone must have told ms about this because there's

a note to say you might have to enable "Show Updates"

I do this and click Remove - "Unable to Uninstall from Specified user

account " - but ms have thought of that too, and have a workaround:

Guess what - you have to edit the Registry <sigh>

- and I thought that un-deleting files with Linux + reiserfs was

difficult!

p.s. the Troubleshooter page also has a "Late-Breaking Notes and Issues"

section which announces that the Citrix Client (guess what my employers are

rolling out to all users) will not work with Protected Mode IE7 on Vista -

the workaround is to right-click the IE icon and select "Run as

Administrator" - ain't this new ms security wonderful?
