To all who give hoot,

Soap can be made from animal fat and lye -- a caustic material that

combines with the fat.

Lye can be found in wood ashes, (I've never had to experience human

ashes (thank God), so I can't acknowledge that use).

Therefore, home-made soap can be made from fat and wood ash plus other

ingredients to suit.

(You can see this done at Greenfield Village near Detroit, MI (At least

when I was a kid anyhow.)
