As many of you know - I have been DEEPLY involved with using AI for Coding
Efforts - largely for conversions from FoxPro to C#. But, also - for some
FoxPro code updates - and even using Claude to help me solve code problems
- even at times data problems.
Yes - it's been a while since I last posted...
Yes - it's been INSANELY Quiet the last few months here on the ProFox
List...
But, something fun occurred today - that I felt I really wanted to chat
here about!
First - as you folks probably already know - the CEO of the co. where I
work - agreed to get an Annual Claude AI Subscrip for me and my Manager -
after I did the initial testing to prove how Claude could be Helpful.
Since then - I have been plowing thru things with Claude...
Then - a couple weeks ago - my manager sent an email to my programming
co-worker, as in, the CEO approved for him to get Claude. Although - at the
time - my co-worker was in Thailand on vacation. So - he got back mid-last
week, and saw the email. Then - like 2 days ago - he got his subscription
to Claude. I had some Serious chats with him - then also discussed a LOT
about how I work with Claude - what I feed him - to do the Screen
conversions. And, he started using Claude to finish the Dev work on a Very
complicated C# screen. He was Immediately getting BLOWN Away by what Claude
could do. And - yeah - he is using Claude Code & the Desktop App - so it
can Directly Read and Manipulate code.
Well, today - I got back to work on this one screen conversion for Cust
Order Maint. I previously did the project prep work - Flattened the FoxPro
screen code - had Claude read it - find all the DBF's - update a FoxPro
program to open them all - then list out ALL DBF files to a status file -
DBF and each Index (List Status) - and all structures (yeah - separate
commands).
And, I already gave Claude my documentation for the Vision Process - where
it can SEE what it produces via a C# screen - to understand the FoxPro
screen layout - and convert it into a Viable C# screen.
So - based upon Everything I gave it - I said - here is the Flattened
FoxPro code for the screen. Produce the XAML code - and Bare min. C# code
behind - just enough so it can run! Claude did it. And, before I ran it for
the VERY First time - I brought up the actual FoxPro screen, via our system
- with an actual data record - and have that window on my 2nd screen. I
told my co-worker to come over - I wanted to show him something - I said -
Claude just created the screen with what I gave him - I am about to Run
that new screen!
It worked - Screen layout was VERY Close to the FoxPro screen layout -
which was running on my second monitor. The new screen also has ALL our
Standard C# control Styles applied!
He was BLOWN AWAY! He was like - WOW - that right there would have taken me
TWO Weeks to develop in C# - and, we are talking Just laying out the
Controls - NO Date wiring involved yet!
So - Bottomline - it was SUPER FUN to watch his shock at what I showed
him!!!
OK folks - Carry On...

Kurt, I love reading this and also Ed's use of Claude to learn the new
tools. Gotta keep those brains elastic!

That is awesome, Kurt! I am continually amazed at what it (AI, Claude,
etc.) can do. I do not write Visual FoxPro regularly, so I usually get a
request every 1-6 months, and I need to do a refresher each time. A couple
of years ago, when I tried to ask ChatGPT questions about FoxPro, I'd get
this crazy mashup of FoxPro and .NET. Now I usually get really good
results. I'm going to share my experiences at VFF in October, but I am
hoping to learn as much from everybody else too! -Jeff

Hey there Amy!
I was VERY Surprised to see your reply!!!
Not only cause I have been a Member of this group for YEARS now - but,
will honestly say - I've seen very, VERY Few women in this group!!!
So - If you're a Newbie to the Group - CONGRATS for finding this group of
Decrepitly Old Programmers like me!
If you're NOT New - then this reply makes me seem like an Arse...
But, either way - yeah - I am Stoked to see your message - I'm Glad you
like what I am sharing here!
Will admit one final thing about this all...
And - I have spoken about this with my 2 main coworkers. But, truthfully -
Claude has allowed me to produce a TON of CODE (seriously - it's a TON -
and Functional) - without the DEEP Knowledge of programming in C# and
without even the full knowledge of doing development in VisualStudio. And,
now - based upon a TON of the work I did to build an Entire Process - now -
based upon the prior work - So, literally about 30-45 min prep work for the
screen - Claude reading FoxPro code - finding all the DBF files as prep -
and other stuff - then I fed all that - others screens as a reference - an
MD Doc with my "Vision" process - then, the final step - tell it to build
the screen - and the actual building - and producing a XAML layout QUITE
Close to the FoxPro layout - but, with our proper Styles for our C# Screens
- like fonts, sizes, even Grid styles - and Boom - the screen was Runable
in like 3 min after the initial prep work.
AI has become a GAME Changer. And - they have been trying to convert OUT of
FoxPro for like 10-12 years - initially to PHP - But, hit many Walls - then
totally changed to now doing C# (which started before I got to the Company)
- and, now I have the chance to EXTREMELY Accelerate the Conversion
process! It kinda Blows My Mind!!! And - it kinda makes ME look like the
Hero - and Who does NOT want to be the IT Super-P Hero!?!?!?
