My step-son has a yahoo account. He showed me that now they're simply
using an app on his phone to confirm his intention to log in instead of
requiring a password. Seems like a great simple idea to me that may
become the defacto standard for others in the future. No more trying to
remember gazillion passwords...just confirm with your phone app! (Yes,
I realize not everyone has smart phones, so there will have to be an
alternative for those folks.)

Two factor authentication. Everyone's doing it.

Not very different from SMS notifications and authentication, in my opinion. :)

Is that two though? Isn't the phone confirmation just 1-factor? He
didn't enter a password on the computer (and I don't think this is
listed as a 'trusted/safe' device).

Borrow your stepson's phone and find out.
If possession of the phone is enough, that is a nasty vulnerability.
I do not have a cell phone myself. I rarely need the
functionality. I occasionally borrow someone's to make a call. Who
would be willing to if it means I could get into his Yahoo! account?
Sincerely,
Gene Wirchenko

I never would have guessed, Gene. Wow. Consider me stunned.
