Hi gang
A client has been told windows 10 does not work with windows server 2007 and
that they need to pay 15,000 AUD (Australia) to upgrade. I smell a money
maker there. I don't use a server any more but does anyone have a view on
this?

Seems that windows 10 is unable to access the server or outlook. Sounds like
a setup issue

I was going to say it's several million people, all of whom had to
futz with their SMB settings, but then I re-read the question. Your
client may be the only one in the world with a copy of "Server 2007"
Perhaps a little more info would help...

There's no such thing as Windows Server 2007.
If they mean Windows Server 2008 or 2008R2 then there is nothing
stopping Windows 10 clients working with it per se. It would connect to
anything down to Server 2000 probably, if you enable SMB 1.0 and CIFS
support.

I can confirm 2003, 2008 and/or 2008R2 all connect no problem.
Never have seen the existence of 2007 server unless it is one of the Small Business System variants (of which there were many) which had their own non-standard naming nomenclature.

Thanks for that. I guess he is muddling office 2007. It must be 2008 server.
Still there is no reason that win 10 cannot work with it as far as I can
tell. I know win 10 love you to sign in with a Microsoft account and I do
here, but there is an option to sign in as other accounts too.

They might be right if the client is on a volume licensing program. Some
components for the activation of client PCs do not run on all versions of
Windows Server. I don't know which versions are supported for the
activation of Windows 10, but the minimum version is likely either Windows
2008 or Windows 2008 R2.
Also, some volume license programs have limited downgrade rights. So the
company might need to move to the current version (or one or two behind)
for compliance rather than technical reasons.
