Alternatives to Master and Slave Terminology

Author: Gene Wirchenko

Posted: 2015-12-11 15:39:57   Link

Dear Vixens and Reynards:

My boss just dropped an interesting one on me. I use the terms

"master" and "slave" in my app. He asked me to not use "slave" with

anyone else, presumably because of someone taking it wrong. I said

that I would see if I could come up with something.

So what can I use for alternatives? I have Web-searched to see

what others are doing and did not find anything that would fit for my

second case.

I use "master" and "slave" in two senses.

1) We have the Master Station from which the high-level

functionality of the system is done. We have various Slave Stations

which are used mainly for DE. The Master Station is also used for DE.

I have come up with "master" and "satellite". Reasonable?

2) The second one is puzzling me. I have forms with an (often)

key portion (master) and a non-key portion (slave). "key" and

"non-key" are awkward and do not communicate well to a non-IT

person. "parent" and "child" is not accurate. What do you suggest?

Sincerely,

Gene Wirchenko

"Worker" and "Pointy-Haired Boss"

"Parent" and "Child" (I'm sure someone will have trigger issues with this, too)

"Worker" and ""Dispatcher" or "Central Control" or "Director"

"Planets" and "Sun"

Worker and Manager or Client and Server.

A shout out to Ted for his Worker and Pointy Haired Boss alternative.

Alternatives to Master and Slave Terminology Redux

Author: Gene Wirchenko

Posted: 2015-12-11 16:28:25   Link

Dear Vixens and Reynards:

I realise that it is Friday afternoon, but I work then, too.

I really do want some terminology that is accurate, minimally

offensive, and that does not sound stupid.

Have another look at my use case:

2) The second one is puzzling me. I have forms with an (often)

key portion (master) and a non-key portion (slave). "key" and

"non-key" are awkward and do not communicate well to a non-IT

person. "parent" and "child" is not accurate. What do you suggest?

Sincerely,

Gene Wirchenko

Hi Ted,

One of the first networks I worked with for a small office was Sun and

Planets. Nobody had a problem with the names until we got to Uranus.

Primary/Secondary or Alpha/Beta are fairly clinical sounding.
