[NF] Microsoft to drop 'Modern' version of Skype in Windows 10

Just in case you ever got into difficulties trying to share screens

with another client, who turned out to have the 'wrong' version of

Skype and you had to try to explain the 'right' and the 'wrong'

versions.

http://www.zdnet.com/article/microsoft-to-drop-modern-version-of-skype-for-windows/

I suspect every vendor: Google with Chromebooks and Android, Apple

with OS X and IOS and a number of Linux variants, are having trouble

separating their products.

Mobile gadgets (phones & tablets) are gaining phenomenally in

capabilities, battery power and CPU, and they're starting to overlap

with low-end laptops and desktops, but there's still a gap. MS choose

to ignore the gap and shoot for an OS that's not going to be fully

useful for a couple of years. Considering their slow pace of release,

that might be their best bet. We live in interesting times.

We have been using the business version of this messaging / video app for a

few years now. Rebranded Skype for Business 2-3 months ago I believe.

It works fairly well to hit someone off of our network. Have interacted

with my dad who still refuses to give up OS/2 on some of his hardware.

He only has slow internet, ok dial up, so it is choppy at best.

I was having trouble installing Skype on my Chromebook. There was a

very talented guy who took the time to make a You Tube on how to install

it. The snag was the version of Skype. Only an older version worked

and it worked fantastic.

Well, in this case, it's the "Modern" (previously "Metro") version of

the app, the touch-only app with reduced features. Good riddance, imo.

A follow-up on this: MS sent out email this morning with instructions

on how to uninstall the "Modern" (aka Metro) version of Skype and

update/upgrade the Desktop version. Be warned the desktop version has

checkboxes pre-checked to install "Click to Call" so Skype reads every

web page and turns phone numbers into Skype links, (whether they send

them to "the cloud" I don't know, but I'd be suspicious) and a second

dialog that wants to make Bing your default search engine and MSN your

homepage, because you know, that has so much to do with Skyping.

Bing's not a bad search engine, I just think trying to slipstream in a

feature like this is underhanded and looks desperate.

Most everything seems functional after the upgrade/date, and "Modern"

removal. Not that deep under Tools, Options, Advanced, they have

turned on Automatic Updates. I have mixed feelings about this. As a

former conference speaker, I was superstitious about doing _anything_

to the machine the week before a conference, because things would stop

working. OTOH, for most consumers, it's the only way they stay

up-to-date.

I hate those kind os 'slip-ins'. But Adobe does it with google tool bar and

the number of times Ive had to uninstall mcafee - despite the presence of

existing anit-virus software....

Everyone does and I hate all of them. Ever been called to fix a friend's

'slow computer' and discovered 5 extra toolbars, three anit-virus programs

and that's before you even look for real malware???

Only like EVERY TIME...

That's why they do it. One of these days we're going to wake up and

realize this is a form of bunco, and make it illegal.
