Take it [WC] folks, or we'll have no recourse but to start talking

about baseball umpires, perfect games, and the legendary Celtics vs.

LA rivalry that are _real_ sports.

OIC -- thanks. The "Ireland" part is what I was missing. Otherwise there

were 100s of "Thierry Henry' links.

So they don't use instant replay in WC competition? On the replays it

looked pretty blatant.

No video review is allowed at all (this was a WC qualifier). IOW, if none of the officials saw it, it didn't happen.

Quoting from Law 5: "The decisions of the referee regarding facts connected with play, including whether or not a goal is scored and the result of the match, are final."

So, on the umpire's call that robbed the perfect game, isn't it a case

of the immovable object and the irresistible force?

1. The umpire's call is final, period. Opening the slightest crack in

that, no matter how egregious the screw-up, means that we'll spend a

half hour every game with the coaches using their allowed 2 instant

replay calls per game to hope to cool off the other team, or get

theirs back together. Life is sometimes unfair, and bad calls happen.

This is a great life lesson.

2. Fair is fair, and what's the point of a baseball commissioner if he

can't once in his career use his inifinite power to right an obvious

wrong.

Please feel free to discuss, just keep the [WC] in the subject.

Thanks for your courtesy.

And how about Venus and that outfit? Should that be allowed?

Shouldn't we just go back to requiring white tennies?

I disagree that you can say that the call on the final out robbed the pitcher of a perfect game. Were there any other calls that may have been wrong? Maybe a 1-1 pitch in the 3rd inning that was called a strike when it should have been a ball? As a batter, you approach a 1-2 pitch much differently than you would a 2-1 pitch, and may have forced him to swing at a questionable pitch.

Or were there any other close plays that went in favor of the pitcher? If so, those also need to be reviewed. All 27 outs make a perfect game, not just the last. In fact, it is the assumption that priors calls are settled fact that allows one to even think that that 9th inning call made the difference.

Thanks. I wondered about that. Futbol seems to be a more "purist" sport

for most fans, like baseball. Ted's right about why the instant replay

wouldn't work in baseball (or life). OTOH, American football's rise in

popularity was driven by TV. Unless, like me, you were raised on the

"live" game, it is better on TV. For the current state of the game,

replay seems appropriate.

I'd hate to see replay review spread further.
