[NF] Small and Light Replacement for Laptop

I am tired of the weight of my laptop.

I keep it because:

- DVD Drive

- UBS Ports

- Uses Windows OS

- I have many Windows applications and don't want to buy new ones

- Office 2003

- Quicken

- Foxpro 2.6a

- And such like

I am interested in a lighter and smaller machine that does the above.

What do you suggest I consider?

Thank you

Charles,

I recently made the move to an Apple laptop and the experience has

significantly exceeded my already high expectations.

I had to give up some old applications I was comfortable with, but I

found the tradeoff to be worth it.

In your case you might find that the cloud versions of Quicken and

Google documents are a reasonable replacement for Quicken and Office

2003.

Good luck with your decision.

Malcolm

Charles

I bought a surface 2 pro. Nice little box.

Has windows 8.1 pro in it. Has a micro sd card slot and a USB 3.0 port. No DVD burner but I bought an LG $25 external for it. I also bought a powered USB 4 port hub, Ethernet adapter, lit external keyboard with touch pad and a 1TB external hard drive for it.

It runs VFP 6 and 9 great. Not sure about 2.6 as Windows 7 did not run 2.6 exe's

I think the surface 3 has been announced. I think the display is bigger.

I bought the 256gb ssd version. The touch screen works great. And at around 2 pounds (3with all my extras) it beats running around with a 6 pound monster.

Just a thought. But if 2.6 does not run it would not be for you.

Best regards

My oldish HP laptop (they call it a notebook) weighs in at around 5 1/2

lb but it has a 15" screen, DVD re-writer, USB, SD/multi card slot,

ethernet, 802.11n wireless, bluetooth, hdmi, 700Gb hybrid ssd/hd (my

mod), Oh and a keyboard/ mousepad ... I'll take a bit of convincing

that I'd be better off with a tablet + ext. DVD + ethernet adapter +

ext. keyboard + ext. hard drive.

ymmv of course <g>

Bear in mind that you will not be running Fox 2.6 on 64-bit Windows.

Allen

My first computer was a 'mechanical graphite display generator complete with a destructive cursor'. It came as a model 2 and was yellow in color. Every once in a while I had to take it off line and tune it up with my pocket knife so precision computing was possible again. The best part was that it was waterproof.

With the surface 2 being modular I only need to take the pieces and parts that I need. The external keyboard keyboard has a magnetic attachment and is easily removed. The on screen keyboard works well with a writing feature that even deciphers my hen scratch. The only real problem is the included pen's mount is also magnetic and does not stay put all that well and can easily be lost. I am sure MS has sold many replacement pens.

Best regards

Jack
