This about sums it up for me:
"It doesn't do a thing to address the fact that Windows isn't a single
OS. It's two of them, mobile and desktop, fused together unnaturally
like a Frankenstein's monster."
And it's sad, because from what I've seen of 8.1, especially on the
eldest kid's laptop, it is an improvement over 7 in a lot of ways.
Starts up like a rocket for one. If you could just boot it straight into
a desktop/Start menu that is like Windows 7, or to the Metro UI on a
tablet, and never the twain meet, it would be great. Or if it were easy
to implement an alternative shell, like the *nix world, but that would
leave them open to the sort of Gnome vs KDE vs whatever infighting that
plagues that platform.

"You can't please everybody, Microsoft. So stop trying. It's time to
double down on the people who actually use your products, not some
mythical group of consumers who will never stop using their simpler
Android and iOS devices just because you wish they would."
Yep. Written for me. Makes all the sense in the world. But how does
that help me support all of my users that are upgrading to Windows 8 and
I can't get my software running as it was without a ton of effort?

Windows 8 (besides the connectivity problems I am having) is great for
the reasons you mention. It is the user interface that is all over the
board. I have to Google just about everything.
Quick, how do you turn down the sound?

How many years ago was it that I said MS should release a stripped-down,
basics-only, no-applications-added, NT-secure/NT-reliable OS for use by
businesses only?
But as we learn in the study of group dynamics, it matters less what is
asked for than who does the asking.

I strikes me that those mumbling how bad win 8.1 is don't use it. Try it for
a while before the thumbs down. It's not that bad. You can ignore Metro and
anyway it's just the start menu in another format. ok Metro progs are
terrible, as are most android and ios apps. And there are things that can
improve the start screen, like folders of programs. But it's ok

Tracy: I found it, but the reason I was looking for it was I was on a
conference call with 10 people from Arizona to India and places in
between and a loud video started in my browser. Yikes!

I have been using it for over a month for everything, especially
supporting my customers with it and I get more frustrated the more I get
into it. The biggest problem I have been having is working with
networks and remote access.
