I program internal applications in foxpro/dos because I can run it under
dosemu. Occasionally I run into problems that I am unable to solve. Is
this an ok forum to voice these issues, or is there a better one for
foxpro/dos. I bought vp5 when it came out, but it immediately crashed.
One of my employees also had the same problem (not enough ram, even
though there was about 700MB in the machine. I have just found dos (we
use wordstar and foxpro in our office on a small network) more
reliable. I use ubuntu 13.04 and dosemu in my office and want to bring
it out but I have dosemu/network issues.

Interesting.
I wasn't aware that we could run fp 2.6 dos this way.
I've been wanting to experiment with linux and this might be the thing that
gets me off the sidelines.
However, I'm PO....
Anybody know if it will run on that raspberry pi thingmajig?
Been wanting to play with it too and it is in my price range.
By the way, loaded python today.
Other than syntax, it appears to remind me a lot about fp 2.6 and seems
pretty straight forward.

There is, actually, a Unix version of FoxPro that will run under Linux.
It's been years since I used it, but, barring a few minor issues, most FPD
programs will run straight on import into the system. (I actually don't
remember what those minor issues were -- I used FPU more then 10 when the
company I was consulting for was shifting from a local company to
nationwide, and there were still problems with setting up Windows-based
WANs. But I do remember that the conversions took little to no time to
do.)

There used to be a SCO Xenix version that would run.
Did a lot of multiuser SBT based systems back in the late 80's

Hi John,
I am very interested by your work so please go on asking question on this list !
I worked a year (in 1999) with FPU2.6 managing a 'big' (600Mo !!) database with
more than 100 users. Client had a small FPU app and I 'expanded' it to a large
one. He was very happy but went bankrupcy a year later !! The only one drawback
I saw at this time was the unability to use a mouse.
Best Regards
The Foxil

Raspherry Pi runs a compact Linux. You should be able to use DOSEmu
after installing it manually via apt-get.
Just google "raspherry pi dosemu"! This search result came from Linux Journal:
http://www.linuxjournal.com/article/1070
You could also compile DOSEmu (anything actually) from source codes.

I barely remembered that it got a command prompt like Foxpro's Command
Window. :)

Sorry, I should have read the results carefully first. It's about
DOSBox, not DOSEmu.

Yeah, I had fun with it last night..
Found this guy's training video's which made it easy and fun
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-lfWzPxOJQ8&list=WLEE3A785FB84A29DA
Started to add his youtube RSS feed to KAAW until I noticed some of his
other videos might not be suitable for all ages.
Oh well, so far, it's been a good training video series, and very similar to
foxbase of all things.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tKTZoB2Vjuk&list=WLEE3A785FB84A29DA
Google apparently also has some training videos that I hope to watch next
week.
I chose the first guys videos because they were bite sized whereas googles
are nearly a hour each

I am hoping for a miracle from Dabo, which was supposed to
inherit everything from Visual Foxpro.
But so far, Dabo's syntax isn't anything close to VFP. And I am a bit
worried by the 3-tier design, which might just increase workload of
coding Dabo and stir debates among developers! :)

It sounds like you thought that Dabo was supposed to be syntactically the same as VFP, but that was never the goal at all. Instead, Dabo gathers the various tools available in Python and makes them work together to give you an environment that is similar to what VFP provided: UI designer, fast database access, local cursors, reporting,

It is taken directly from Codebook, which I helped write many years ago, and which was the basis for several of the major VFP frameworks, such as VFE or Oak Leaf. I don't think it is all that controversial. ;-) Besides, you can create single-tier apps in Dabo if you want; it just will make them harder to expand and maintain.
