Blat Problem on remote PC (but it works on ours!)

Works fine from our PCs but not the client. The message returned from blat is:

Error: cannot connect to server (timed out if winsock.dll error 10060)

Error: not a socket

Is this a firewall issue? What must be done at that site to allow this to work?

TIA!

Is there a firewall on the machine ?

Is the mail server internal or through there ISP over the internet ?

If they are able to send and receive via another program like 'Outlook'

then it probably isn't a firewall issue

Can you ping the mailserver from the PC ?

To test what ports are open on the PC you could Google for NMAPNT

it works pretty well, or, if you have access to a Linux box :) on the

network

you could check to see if NMAP is installed and use that.

You can also try telneting to the mail server on port 25 from the box

that is failing to connect. That should tell you if the SMTP port is

inaccessible or not.

Blat Problem

Author: John Weller

Posted: 2013-07-15 07:42:08   Link

I have been successfully using CDO to send emails from within an app using a

Gmail account I set up for the purpose. I decided to use Blat instead after

all the comments here about how good it is :-). If I use my personal email

account parameters it works fine but as soon as I change it to the Gmail

parameters (which work with CDO) I get an error message 'File name (message

text) not given" OR "Bad argument given'

The code section setting out the parameters is:

*&* Create an object to use to hold the email parameters

loParam = CREATEOBJECT('custom')

*&* Add and populate the properties

WITH loParam

*&* From Address

.ADDPROPERTY('cFromAddress', 'myaccount@gmail.com')

*&* To Address - separate addresses with commas

.ADDPROPERTY('cTo', 'john@wessexcomputers.co.uk')

*&* CC Address - separate addresses with commas

.ADDPROPERTY('cCC', '')

*&* BCC Address - separate addresses with commas

.ADDPROPERTY('cBCC', 'john@wessexcomputers.co.uk')

*&* Subject

.ADDPROPERTY('cSubject', 'Test')

*&* Body

.ADDPROPERTY('cBody', 'test')

*&* HTML format

.AddProperty('lHTMLFormat', .F.) && set to plain text,

change to .T. to send HTML

*&* SMTP Server

.ADDPROPERTY('cSMTPServer', "smtp.gmail.com")

*&* Port

.AddProperty('nPort', 465)

*&* User name

.AddProperty('cUserName', 'myaccount@gmail.com') && SMTP

user name

*&* Password

.AddProperty('cPassword', 'mypassword') && SMTP password

*&* Attachments

*!* .ADDPROPERTY('aAttachment[1]', '')

*!* .aAttachment[1] = ThisForm.NewsLoc

*&* Priority

.AddProperty('nPriority', 0) && 1 = high, 0 =low

ENDWITH

I can send and receive from the Gmail account normally.

Any help gratefully received!

TIA

Blat is a great choice to send email via SMTP. However, the mail server

you're trying to reach needs to be able to speak the same set of protocols.

I recall a while ago Google Mail was trouble, as I needed to set up some

sort of certificate to exchange with the server to establish an encrypted

connection. Looking over topics in the Blat Google Group, this doesn't seem

to be the case any more. Google Mail is no doubt the target of Billions of

spam attempts each day, so it's understandable they would make access a

little challenging.

The fact that it works with your credentials but fails with the other set

of credentials is a great clue. I have run into trouble with Blat failing

to properly parse a command line, where a single missing space (or

additional one!) would cause it to fail. You might want to try turning on

the log and seeing what you are sending and the responses you are getting

to see if that provides more ideas. See:

http://www.blat.net/examples/log.html

Hi Ted,

Thanks for your invaluable (as always) help. The problem appears to be with

Gmail and Blat; using Gmail and CDO the same account details are working

well and using my account and Blat all is well. The log results are:

2013.07.15 15:01:20 (Mon)------------Start of Session-----------------

Blat v3.1.1 (build : Feb 27 2013 20:04:29)

32-bit Windows, Full, Unicode

Error: Wait a bit (possible timeout).

*** Error *** SMTP server error

Error: Not a socket.

Error: Not a socket.

2013.07.15 15:01:50 (Mon)-------------End of Session------------------

I have to confess I've never kept up with a lot of this technology and the

message 'Not a socket' is meaningless to me.

Verrrry interesting....

John, a little Google-fu seems to indicate that iuf you want to use SSL SMTP wth blat you need to add another tool to the toolkit. Here's one example:
