A special appeal for consideration from Tamar. Helping get the word
out...don't think I can help by making it though; we've had some
leadership changes and the Fox isn't something our company wants to
continue investing in I'm afraid. :/
I wonder about some sort of online conference instead, where you could
subscribe and pay for the sessions ala carte on your own time? Beats
them having the site expense. Yes, I know and fully agree that the
networking that occurs at conference is extremely valuable (perhaps most
valuable) and this doesn't let that occur, but I'm just thinking of Plan
B if Plan A fails to happen.

Hey Mike - I just read the LinkedIn posting. Man - that would TOTALLY Be a
Bummer to have it cancelled. I've been wanting to go for a number of years
now - but, the past co. I worked for - nor the current gig (my boss was the
CEO & manager at my last job - and he started up THIS Co. after I was canned
- then he was also Canned last Nov.). Ain't no way he would send me - all he
complains about is that he can barely afford to pay our salaries (but,
honestly - your boss should NEVER Tell Employees that - its up to THEM To
Run the Business - and not keep complaining money is Tight - cause it shows
they just don't know how to run a Business!!!).
And, I can't afford to pay my own way - at least not right now. I already go
each year to my big Graphics conference (SIGGraph in end of July) - and
can't afford another conf. right now! It sure would be a bummer to see the
conference just go away...

It's a good technique to keep down the costs of salaries!
Not picking on you in particular, Kurt, just picking up on the thread. We
all have our families to feed, our priorities on how to spend our money.
So, don't think these comments are personal.
When we were actively developing VFP, Laura and I attended at least one
conference a year, 1993-2004, and sometimes as many as five (!) and never,
never did we feel a single one was a waste of the money we spent. In nearly
every session, we would walk away with new knowledge we could apply to a
customer situation or solve an existing issue. The contacts we made helped
us reach out for help and support and brought in business.
Professionals attend professional conferences. If professionals don't
support conferences, they'll stop, and the profession will be the worse for
it.

In all of the years going to VFP or .NET conferences I believe that an
employer only picked up 2 of the tabs. The rest came out of my wallet
because I was the one who was learning and consuming the information.

For the bulk of my VFP career, I was an independent consultant. So going to a conference meant paying my own registration, hotel, airfare, meals, etc., and still I went to at least two a year: DevCon and at least one regional conference. Like Ted, I can say that every one resulted in either me growing as a developer, or making contacts that brought in more business, or (usually) both.
Since I've moved to the Python world, I attend as many conferences as I can. I've been to the last 10 (wow! it's been that long!) US PyCons, and in a week I head out to speak at PyCon Australia. One of the things that attracted to me about Python was that there is a strong, vibrant community, as strong as the VFP community ever was. At both VFP and Python conferences, I've met interesting people and forged friendships that have lasted to this day.
So if you have an opportunity to go, even if it means a bit of sacrifice, by all means go. You will not regret it.

I attended a Southwest Fox Conference when I was working at MicroStar but
the company was affected by the economy and is not doing well and I couldn't
go to any more of the conferences. It was great!!!!
I wish I could attend another one. If I get more money later I will pay for
my own way and attend the next one if they are still around next year.

Profoxers,
Putting on a conference is a risky endeavor. Conference centers require a guaranteed minimum income to block the dates
of a conference; for a conference like Southwest Fox and Southwest Xbase++, that minimum is in the tens of thousands of
dollars.
Last week we had half the number of people who were registered at this time last year, and last year's number took a big
leap of faith on our part to carry on. See, our break-even point is about 75 people, and according to our contract with
the hotel, we have until July 2 to cancel or we're on the hook for our guaranteed minimum whether there's a conference
or not.
Southwest Fox is one of the highlights of the year for the three of us. A ton of planning and work goes into organizing
it, but we are happy to do it because we feel it's an important way to keep our community going. We're realistic enough
to know that it won't go on forever and each year could be the last. So, was 2012 the last year? You can help us make
that decision. If you were thinking about going this year, vote to continue the conference by registering now. If you
know others thinking of attending, share this message with them.
If we do end up cancelling, everyone who registered will get their money back in full, so you can't lose out. (Just
don't make your flight reservation right way.)
The FoxShow #77 (http://www.thefoxshow.com/) features an interview with us discussing this and other SWFox-related
issues, so be sure to check it out. Andrew MacNeill also has a blog post about this.

Rick,
How many of the folks last year were there for the xBase++ side of
things? Just curious on the percentage of Fox vs. xBase++ attendees.
Wishing you success in your continued endeavors especially with regards
to this conference!

Rick, all,
I'm sure this isn't a new thought, but it strikes me to mention that looking
at the future of small technical conferences I think some transformation can
go a long way.
In a nutshell: small attendance + interactive live feed + video archives =
profitable, educational and entertaining. At least the potential is there.
Good luck and best wishes.
Bill

I think the days of conducting a small conference in the physical world
should be replaced by something like a video conference over internet... :)
