[NF] Writing a program for Linux Tablets.

Hi everyone

I have just taken on a client as a favour for my local church.

They deal with mentally handicapped children.

They saw some of the cheap Linux Tablets that I sell and think they could

afford to buy some for their volunteers to use for data entry.

I am looking for ideas on how I could program them with a menu and some

forms that they could enter data into, then have it email the data to their

supervisor, to input into a master table (FoxPro)

Bear in mind I am 70, only able to program using VFP, and would find it

difficult to learn another language. If relatively easy then I am prepared

to give my time and learn.

TIA

Peter,

Many options here but Real Basic is probably the easiest but at a cost, even though it is low.

How about Dabo though ..... free, but you'll need to get up to speed with Python which shouldn't be difficult.

... and you know where to come for any problem solving!

Real Basic fan here so take my opinion with a grain of salt.

Early in 2013, they'll release the next version of Real Studio but with

a new pricing model. This new pricing model may help. You will be able

to develop in Real Studio and try out Real Studio for free. You'll only

need to purchase a license if you want to compile an application. You

can compile and deploy as many applications as you like, just like VFP,

but that's the requirement.

I have developed a VFP class in Real Studio to help ease the

transition. You get FileToStr(), StrToFile(), Transform(), etc. Other

than that, the language is a very close cousin to VFP.

Can you give an example of the brand and model of the Linux Tablets? If

it is full Linux, app development shouldn't be a problem. If it is

Android, then we have a problem. Real Studio doesn't compile to Android

(yet). You can however build a web application in Real Studio and have

it accessible across multiple platforms.

Good luck!

Thanks for the replies so far.

Hi Kevin there are two Tablets that I supply so far, One is a Coby and the

other is a GoTab

Both are android an d the operating system version is Android 4 Ice Cream

Sandwich.

These are priced at the top end of what the charity can afford.

Cheers

Peter

For an Android targeted platform, I'd recommend either [1] Real Studio

Web Edition which allows for building web applications as if you are

developing a VFP desktop application ( http://www.realsoftware.com/web/

) or [2] Illumination Software Creator which allows for building a

native Android application using a non-programming paradigm. (

http://lunduke.com/?page_id=3454 )

Will they be doing data entry with internet access available? If the

tablets have wireless, a web application could save you from the

difficulties of trying to shoehorn a data entry app in a language you're

less familiar with, onto a platform you may find is not all that

compatible. In addition, a web application could be accessible to

volunteers with smart phones, their own tables (just as likely iPads,

Kindles or even W-8 devices), and you could write the app in FoxPro.

I may be a bit of a Luddite myself, but I don't think the idea of writing

device-specific applications should be the first choice, unless you need to

take advantage of hardware (like a camera or GPS) not available to a more

general solution, like a web app.

There ain't no such thing as a free lunch, of course: you'd need to host

the web app somewhere, likely a FoxPro-friendly host for Web Connection or

another VFP solution.
