Buy VFP 9 plus alternative reporters.

Author: Peter Cushing

Hi All,

Been working happily with VFP7 for years and not found a reason to

upgrade. Now need to do a report with multiple detail bands so the new

reporter looks ideal. Just checking out versions of VFP9 and the

upgrade version is cheaper, but come across conflicting information

about which version you can upgrade from. Just want to check if anyone

here has upgraded from a version before 8.

While I am looking at this I might as well look into alternative

reporters like:

- Stonefield query

- Crystal reports

- XFRX

etc

Any recommendations or comments on the above?

Thanks,

Peter,

Upgrade from 7 to 9 is virtually painless as long as you obey a few simple guidelines which I did when I ran the upgrade. You have my phone number, just ring me if you have any problems.

XFRX is great for producing reports in various formats, Stonefield is fantastic at framework management etc but I would steer clear of Crystal. I have every version since 8.5, including the latest version and it is 1 - bloatware, 2 - difficult to use if you aren't prepared to use visual studio to drive it and 3 - slow!!

Also it doesn't really fit right with ODBC data which is what you have to use to access the VFP files. If you are using SQL server then it is much better. All the documentation written regarding VFP and Crystal (Hentzenwerke http://www.hentzenwerke.com/catalog/crysdev.htm ) was written for versions 8 and 9 and it is a completely different beast now, anyhow I don't think you can even buy the old versions any more. I have the books if you want to browse them.

As far as I can remember, VFP9 upgrade is the same as full. Just an install.

I upgraded from 7 to 9 without a problem. I also like stonefield query.

Thanks Dave (and others), I'll check out the information.

Been reading a bit about the new report writer and looks very good (as

long as I can get them to pay for it!)

Cheers,

I have been using Crystal for the past 3 years and will start #4 real

soon for a massive reporting system that IP uses. All data is on

Oracle and is referenced via ODBC in Crystal. Yes they are using the

huge Crystal Management system not sure the new name in version 2008

which IP just upgraded to this winter.

The newer version is faster then the v10 or 11. Easier to pull in

some of the changes and you can tweak a few without having to save

everywhere.

I maintain 150+ annualized reports for the Tax department. I have to

tweak last years version with this years views to keep the data

accurate over time. IP buys and sells too many plants worldwide that

it is the only safe way. IP is close to having everything on SAP.

2015 is the target and they started 2004-2005.
