I recently purchased the latest winzip update as I usually do. The last time I used it I got the usual popup about a
free update. I always get this as it usually has some bug fixes, etc. Because of a previous bad experience with
Symantec, I quickly glanced through the licence agreement. Corel (which ownes winzip I guess) has a sneaky hidden
agreement buried down in the license agreement to automatically bill your credit card which they have on file from your
last purchase (illegal I am sure to keep this without written permission) for a yearly 'subscription' (for what, who
knows). It says if the credit card is declined for any reason you still owe the subscription fee. I did not install the
'update'. I'll bet this is an update to the license agreement only. I hope someone files a class action suit for keeping
credit card information on file without permission.
Needless to say this is the last winzip version I will ever buy. I am interested in alternatives. I have several now
that I like more than winzip, however, I need the ability to span DVDs. My backup always takes at least 3 DVDs. Winzip
almost always crashes on the last DVD so I have been saving 3 files to a folder. Then I use a free utility CDBurnerXP to
write each of the 3 files to DVDs. I find this is faster than using winzip to write to the DVDs when it works which is
only about 1 out of 3 times.

Winzip is completely unnecessary as the underlying compression/decompression routines
are all available for free. Plus, don't modern Windows versions have this built in to
Explorer?

I gave up on ZIP long ago and have been using 7-zip for creating archives. You can also use the 7Z format to make the archive files smaller (although it does take more time to compress).
I haven't tried using it to backup to DVD's, so YMMV there although it does say it can split files into DVD-sized volumes.
And the price is right (free).

WinXP SP3 (and possibly earlier as well as later...Vista, 7) opens ZIP
files as folders, but for other needs, 7ZIP has been very helpful. There
are many other free ZIP utilities available for Windows.
Sad to see Corel go from the great company they started out as to the
bottom-feeding sludge they are now.

winrar, 7-zip ... why not get a few external HDDs or flash drives and
stop torturing yourself with spanning DVDs, if one gets scratched the
set will be useless.

I used PKZIP from the DOS days, plus occasional WinZip when I didn't
have a command window. With Win 7-64 PKZIP won't run (16-bit), so I
switched to 7-Zip, and have no complaints whatever.
Win Vista and 7 open a zip file as a folder, and you can extract right
from Explorer. But you can't zip from there. BUT... if you have 7-Zip
installed you can just select whatever files you want and right-click;
the menu has '7-Zip' on it, and you can zip to a .7z or a .zip file, as
you wish.
Highly recommended.

I agree with all of the above about WinZIP and Corel. Too bad.
For spanning DVDs, I use NTI (Newtech Infosystems) Media Maker, which takes file
trees and splits across the DVD as necessary. Each disk is an independent
portion of the file tree, not some archive set. Also burns ISOs nicely. Easy
to use, and fairly cheap, too.
I guess there would be a problem if a single file is larger than one DVD
(whatever flavor you have). WinZIP does solve that one, but (see earlier notes)...

Years ago I used WinZip 7.0 in my application. That version was free,
worked from the command line and it integrated well. When they wanted to
charge, I switched to Zip Genius which is free, works from the command line
and unzips a lot of stuff including .tar files. I never had the balls to
try it spanning dvds but it has never failed on zip ftp files of 140 or so
meg.
But, why do backups with zips? Do they do a compare? I believe CDBurner
does (I use it), but then you are just making a verified copy.
I have been using Nova Backup for the last 4 or more years. It compresses
and I can fit 4.8 gig with "visible" room to spare on a dvd. The buy price
is about 50 bucks and it can be annually leased for around 20. Bottom line
- it works well. Some tools are critical. To me they include Nova Backup,
Zip Genius, FileZilla, Beyond Compare, and Notepad++. The only one I pay
for is Nova and all of them never fail. What more can one ask?
If you need to zip try Zip Genius....

Sure you can. Send To... Compressed (zipped) Folder
It's very slow though.
