I have a 24 year old living in our house that does nothing but surf the
Internet. We won't go into the details because I haven't had my pills
today. ;^)
My wife has been uploading her music to Google Music and it has been
slowing down our connection to a standstill. It has been nice because
our boy can't do much while the music is uploading.
I was wondering what I can do when her upload is done to slow down our
connection without turning it off. I would like to have him do a Google
search and it take about 10 to 20 minutes. ;^)
He does all of this stuff while we are sleeping.
Any ideas will be welcome.

Hi Jeff,
Switch to verizon dsl, or dial-up. That will make him move out.

I love your answers as I knew I would! I want a legal way of slowing
our internet down to a crawl without shutting it off. I can cut it, but
in my mind it is more frustrating for the internet to be slow than now
at all. If you have no internet you do something else. If it is slow,
you wait.
Keep those ideas coming!

Changing the DNS server entries in the router might serve to slow things down.

Hi Jeff,
With 2 easily distracted teenage daughters, I have the same goals as
you.
My d-link router claims to have some QoS (quality of service) options
where I can control the speed of certain activities, but I've never been
able to get this to work. Same for a feature that claims to block
certain IP addresses on a specified schedule, eg. block internet use
from 11pm to 6am.
As an interim solution, I had taken to hiding my router's power supply
but my kids were smart enough to find replacements that matched my
router's power specs.
My current solution is to replace the cable between my cable modem and
router with an identical looking bad cable and claim that Comcast is
having problems again ;)

Our kid used to sneak into the living room and watch tv at night. I cut
the power chord and put in a connector and took the "pig tail" to bed
with me.
I don't really want to shut down the router, although I have used the
shut off during certain hours but he was able to get around it somehow.
He changed his IP address.
I would really like to slow it down to the point of frustration. That
is my goal.
Thanks,
Jeff

My Linksys router has the ability to allow or disallow internet access
during times that you determine.
http://192.168.1.1/index.stm?title=Access%20Restrictions-Internet%20Access%2
0Policy is the link to my router. I think most routers have this
functionality. You can have yours running with full access, all the time,
and limit theirs to specific times. If them being on the internet all the
time is a problem, I would recommend putting some random deny times in
during the day, and block them totally at night, if you don't want to have a
confrontation. Personally, I enjoy confrontation, so I would just tell them
I am blocking it and if they don't like it, they can take a number.
