I am very disappointed with my ipad. Mostly because it does not have GPS
built in. Its a toy of an operating system and everything cost money, even
what's free on Android. A few nice touches but little else. Too big for the
pocket and too small to do anything serious with other than emails. Its an
expensive email getter.

I'm sure I'm going to get flamed for this, but in general, it seems like
if you decide to swallow the Apple pill, you will be paying for pretty
much anything and everything at the rates Apple alone controls.
For that, you get a very nicely controlled universe that doesn't deviate
or provide surprises...as my son says, "It just works." Okay, fine. And
"you just pay."
A client of mine who has jumped in the deep Apple end of the pool after
over two decades of PC use has observed that "I either pay upfront with
Apple, or I pay as I go with PCs...in my time and frustration." I
suppose he has a point if there is no joy in the challenge of making the
computer do what you want. Maybe that's why I do what I do (programming,
tech support)...because I enjoy the challenge.
In the end, to each his own.

Techies and consumers often have very different opinions on a product value.
When in the mid 90's analysts started forecasting a huge growth for the intenet, I confess I did not believe it at first; and it finally happened.
All what I've seen announced in the past 20 year finally happened, sooner or later, but did came through.
That's the only reason why, based on experience, I believe these propheties will come through, despite I do share your doubts about the product's real benefits and usage.
What benefit brings the latest fashion compared to last year's? and people spend millions on latest trendy jeans or shirts.
the heaviest pledge for m$ is to have ignored people's opinion and taste for so long.

My sister got an iPad last Christmas to replace her broken laptop.
Until she realised that you need a PC/Mac in order to use an iPad!
Went back to the shop the next day...
p.s. Is it just me or does the brushed steel look seem really dated?

I was playing with my cousin's android tablet over the Thanksgiving holidays there isn't an application that I have running currently on a desktop that I could possibly think of migrating to the tablet because of the lack of a keyboard.

Al,
It's horses for courses with regards to the iPad. Personally I wouldn't be without mine, but then again I use it for flying as a moving map GPS (I have an iPad-1 with GPS i.e the one that can take a sim card) which has meant that I could ditch a 2000 pound GPS and replace it with the 400 pound iPad which is quicker, lighter and better.
Also I use it to hold all my manuals on, saving screen space and being more efficient when looking at documentation. Al, you should love the iPad for this.
In addition there are loads of useful apps such as news readers that I can run as well as the email obviously. For a 400 pound device it is wonderful and if you compare the screen response to an Android tablet then is is years ahead in functionality. The iPad was never designed to replace a PC or laptop, it was marketed for specific markets and i think the sales alone prove how successful it has been. OK some of these markets have been manufactured, but they serve a useful purpose
Ease of use also comes into it. Just sat at the side of the chair I can browse the internet instantly without waiting for it to "de-hibernate" or boot up. My wife picks up the iPad and uses it just like she would do a calculator but would never use her laptop which I spent a fortune on because she sees it as "too much trouble". However I don't know if that's a good or bad thing!
Lets put it this way, it has had a load more use than the 300 pound netbook that lies unused most of the time so let's give credit where it is due to Apple as innovators.

I have a first-gen 16GB iPad, and I quite like it for things like FB
updates and browsing IMDB etc while watching TV. Also I have loads of
scanned old computer mags on it for bedtime reading. However mobile
Safari is terrible, the mail client is barely OK (when it actually
decides to retrieve SMTP mail instead of refusing and leaving you with
no indication as to why) and the Windows version of iTunes should be
taken into a field and quietly shot. I had to add 250 PDF files into the
'Books' section in iTunes the other day. Can I create collections or
subfolders to put these in via iTunes? I cannot. Can I add more than
about 25 at a time? No, because iTunes will just do nothing. No message,
no crash, just does nothing. It's shite.
It's also jailbroken with Cydia on it, so you're free from the walled
garden to at least some extent.

It is what it is. My wife loves her's. I didn't pay for the
phone/gps in it, just the bare bones model. Thought it was going to
be a book reader for her. Was I so wrong about that! It is an
entertainment center for her. Playing games as well as taking it to
the bar for sporting events where she can pull stats and details from
the local wifi. She loves it.
Also has a few pages of games/toys for the grandkids to play with.
The speed and quality of the device is fantastic as well as the small
size and light weight. It doesn't need a 7 pound power adapter like
other notebooks!
She also has some music apps for listening to ideas she has for her
youth music ministry program at church that she directs.
