[OT] Did they have similar comments about slaves vs. free?

Hi Everybody,

http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2011/10/27/alabama-tries-to-connect-jobless-residents-with-farm-jobs-finds-few-employers/

"Potato farmer Kevin Smith told The Associated Press that the Americans

he hired show up late, work slower and are ready to call it quits after

a day on the job or sooner.

"I've had people calling me wanting to work," Smith said. "I haven't

turned any of them down, but they're not any good. It’s hard work, they

just don’t work like the Hispanics with experience."

So what it is really about is human machines, never mind if they are

legal. These guys want to pay piecework, temporarily, at a rate where

you have to be very fast, never take a break and still not make minimum

wage. Oh, yeah, bring your own boxes, too.

I have picked produce as a younger person. It is hard, but not

impossible. However, when I picked it was a family farm and everyone in

the field was either family or a neighbor.

Regards,

Pete

The answer is to have guest worker programs that work.

I agree. When their contracts are over, they should go back to Mexico and

spend their money there. Not have all their relatives come into the U.S. and

get them on welfare.
