[NF] Dual-core vs Quad-core...need common sense opinions

I'm facing the need to upgrade my personal development workstation, and

am wondering if there is any advantage to a quad-core processor over a

dual-core for single-user, workstation, development in VFP9, type of

work? Stuff like email, web browsing, VFP application development,

listening to Pandora, etc.

I've built and installed a few quad-core data servers running Linux, and

it is clearly obvious why those applications benefit, but I'm not sure

that the additional $ cost would be a good investment when using a

quad-core processor as a workstation.

Up until recently, the price difference between dual and quad cores made

the decision easy...no. Now the difference is not as bad for the

CPU...even though the i3 and i5 usually need a more expensive RAM and

Mboard to support them.

Then there's the multi-thread benefits...or not.

Opinions? Experiences?

Thanks!

Mike Copeland

Hi Mike,

If you will keep this machine for personal use after you retire get all

the horsepower you can possibly afford. The ordinary applications keep

bulking up to soak up the power. Developers always write for the hottest

gaming hardware out there, because they can. Economy, especially economy

with someone else's money, never occurs to them.

In five years your old box will choke on the anti virus application

alone. And the spam blocker will need a CPU the size of a refrigerator.

I'm thinking he's looking at the general picture for his computing

needs, not that he expected VFP to take advantage of that. ??

I did see on VFPx that there's a project called Parallel Fox to help

Foxpro applications take advantage of multiple processors, iirc.

Right...VFP is only a piece of the puzzle for my personal workstation.

I'm also trying to learn Python and I do a fair amount of PHP (Not PCP!)

and web development.

I know VFP is single-thread...oh boy, do I ever. I get a lot of

complaints about "I had to shut down your app because it said "Not

Responding"..."

Oye, give it a chance...Windows 7 is awfully quick to condemn an

application for not responding.

Anyway, I know tomorrow is another day, demands for memory, storage, and

CPU face-time are constantly increasing, and my own patience for waiting

while an app paints the screen with purty graphics (ooooooooh! did you

see the puppy?!) ....but somewhere there is a sweet spot of $$$ vs.

Horsepower and when I'm spending MY money, I'm careful to search for

that sweetest of sweet spot.

Thanks for the thought-cycles...anyone else have experience with Quad vs

Dual cores on the desktop for general computing?

Mike

I saw that and it looks ok but you would have to tell a particular method to

use a core. Might need to sort out a class to do that. Don't know if there

is a way to find out how busy a core is and use another one.
