Does anyone else have optimum online using unauthenticated mail through port 25 using their mail.optonline.net smtp server? All of a sudden none of my devices are able to send out over port 25 and none of the email clients. They SWEAR that they didn't change a thing, but I don't believe them. I've tested that they haven't shut off port 25,
Any ideas?

Sounds like the server got on the blacklist. Are the messages going straight to spam/junk?

I have no idea. I don't get descriptive errors from the device, all I get from the NAS is "Failed to send message", the router gives no message at all when it sends an alert and it fails, and the Health monitor software gives "Failed to send alert" message too. I haven't tried setting up an email client on their remote desktop server, but I'm really getting frustrated because I know it's on their end.
What's happened in the past is Optimum will turn off port 25 to prevent spam flowing through their system, but they swear our stuff is wide open and I can send to another SMTP server that's built into the NAS.
It's like their mail.optonline.net SMTP server now requires authentication or something but they're telling me that's wide open as long as we're physically connected to their network.

Sounds like the charter.net service I have. As long as I'm in the defined IP range they know as their own everything works. Did your dynamic IP change? If not, it may be that the server you are connecting to is the backup server for the main when it goes offline and it is misconfigured.

Michael,
Its problems like you describe that encourage me to suggest you using a
commercial SMTP hosting service.
I'm a big fan of fastmail.fm's paid email services that provide smtp
accounts that work on a variety of ports. I believe most commercial
email services offer a similar capability (yahoo, etc).
For $20-$40 year you can save yourself a lot of hassle :)
Malcolm

Don't you just love that 'feature' on Charter - you can only send email from your home (so they can tell you are in their IP range). I take my notebook everywhere and like to keep the history of my conversations and I don’t like using their web-based email client.
They have a little pocket of users where I live, and everyone who has them hopes they sell out to Verizon someday. Still, it is better than the DSL line I used to have. Do you use Charter for TV? I kept my Directv for now; that is getting pretty expensive but I can't survive without the NHL Center Ice package. lol

If I can help temporarily, you could use my leafe.com SMTP server.
If so, send me the IP address(es) of the sending devices (off-list!) so I can add them to the accepted list for relay.

Mal,
So you pay $20-$40/year and can then use their email as the sender to
all your clients, and the connections to their mail server are then
guaranteed to work?

Regardless of whether you agree with his politics or personal stuff, you
have to admit that Ed Leafe is an amazing, great guy for his willingness
to help others, even when there's nothing in it for him. Just saying.
Now if only he'd see the light of Christianity and renounce his liberal
beliefs.....lol.
