...literally.
For some odd reason, the HELP is no longer accessible from within VFP9
(sp2) on my WinXP development system.
I press F1, nothing.
Type "help" in the command window, nadda.
CLick "Help" on the menu bar, then choose "Microsoft Visual Foxpro Help
F1" and nuttin.
It was working fine until about a week ago, and I'm not aware of any
major changes (well, Acrobat has updated about 12 times and of course
Java has been updated at least 4 times) but nothing major.
I've checked the obvious:
TOOLS - OPTIONS - FILE LOCATIONS - HELP FILE is correct and the CHM
file it points to will open if you double-click it.
I've also searched for the registry entries, and they all seem to be
where and what they should be.
I tried "set help to" in VFP, which is supposed to reset it to whatever
default is....nothing.
I even downloaded the new, revised and corrected Help file from the VFPx
website. Got the CHM file, still won't open from within VFP9!
Suggestions?
Thanks!
Mike Copeland

I have the same problem. But my copy of VFP wasn't installed, it was
just copied from a previous PC.
Probably something is not registered.

Mike,
I just happen to have a note on this happening to me a while back, copied
below
Bill
11-16-07 noticed that Help stopped working.
Fix was to
1. Copy FOXHHELP9.EXE and FOXHHELP9.DLL into C:\VLS (root dev folder)
2. Start command window
3. Enter command: foxhhelp9 /regserver
fixed the problem for both the dev env and also the installed EXE on this
machine.

Bill,
Thanks! Unfortunately when I search, I can't find any files named
FOXHHELP9.EXE and DLL.
Waitaminute...checking the info on the WestWind link you sent, it shows
that those two files are supposed to be in the Common Files folder.
Interesting....they are both there, but both have been renamed
FOXHHE~1.EXE
FOXHHE~1.DLL
Curious!
Renamed them, Help works like a champ now! Thanks Bill! Okay, anyone
want to take a stab at how they got renamed??? Pretty bizarre. I wonder
if this is related to problems being caused by my friend, AVAST, and
it's new Sandbox feature...

I can't recall what caused the problem in my case, but pretty sure it was
something else.
Your case looks like something changed 9 chr names to 8, and if so there may
be other occurances (?)

Yup...those are DOS-sized 8.3 file names if I ever saw one.
So far, nothing else is acting badly, and I have been needing a good
excuse to move my stuff over to a new Win7 system. I can't just sit here
and let everyone else enjoy the pain and suffering of "the 7."
Thanks for the lead, Bill. The older I get the more I have to look into
VFP Help to remember what I forgot!

Mike,

Yeah. Still wondering if whatever did it only picked on these 2 files ...

I'm still using XP for dev because it's tried and true and on a hefty
machine with dual monitor support that I don't want to mess with. I do have
two cheapo win/7 machines for testing. I will say they are performing
flawlessly so far. In fact, I'm amazed at how much I got for a few hundred
bucks. Good time to be in the software business

Me too. I try (but this case shows I'm only so good at it) to keep notes
about all these details in a chm 'dev guide'.

I have a desktop icon to get to the vfp help:
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual FoxPro 9\dv_foxhelpSP2.chm"
