I'm trying to convert some patient files to foxpro from a Siemen's hospital computer.
They have data type 'C' for character, 'Z' for numeric and 'ZS' which has odd characters in it.
Does anyone know what ZS means and how to convert it? It is supposed to be in currency form, if that helps.

Could they be xBase-style picture codes as opposed to a data type? Z
being 'blank if zero' .

The file is an odd format which I haven't seen before. The patient balance is supposed to be in column 810 for a length of 9 (7 and 2 after decimal)
In that field are weird characters like '}' 'J' and other characters. Is this some packed format? I don't get it.
All the other data so far has been either Z for numeric (which I think is left zero filled) and C for character.

That's cobol. I found some info about the data types here:

Have a look. Unfortunatelly I can't be more helpful but hopefully this will
put you on the right track.

Holy Shit! "Zoned Signed" I haven't seen that since college. COBOL, I
believe. (I've tried to forget it) If it is, watch out for record
overlays - same file could have different record layouts.

I ran across this is download files from a few securities firms.
{ABCDEFGHI represent positive 0 through 9
}JKLMNOPQR represent negative 0 through 9
256K converts to -2562
256B converts to 2562
the last field gives the last digit and the sign of the number

That's called a "sign overpunch". In the last column, you punch the
digit and also the 12-row if it's positive and the 11-row if negative.
(You are using punched cards, aren't you?)
Nostalgia aside, just retrieve the fields as Character, then run them
through a conversion routine. Pretty easy.

THANKS SO MUCH FOR EVERYONE'S HELP! I'll take a look at these examples and see if I need to ask any more questions.
Thanks!
