I think it will take a while to get off the ground. My understanding
is that this is a fork of OpenOffice.org with the goal of removing the
proprietary bits that Sun and/or Oracle may have introduced. I
understand the Fedora project has decided to switch to it on their
next version, Fedora 15. I'd wait until it was packaged by my distro
vendor, as I wouldn't want to have to debug installation and packaging
problems in an office package!

LibreOffice *is* OpenOffice, rebranded. Fallout from Oracle's takeover of Sun. I
think OpenOffice has a stake through its heart, and thanks to Open Source lives on in
LibreOffice. Oracle tried to keep it under its control, but the developers walked.

What I need is a good alternative to Visio.
I would LOVE to use it, but my company won't buy it and the IT Director
won't let me use the MSDN license for it so it sits unused. And I can't
afford a license for it on my own...

Not a one-to-one drop-in replacement, but I've had success with
OpenOffice.org's Draw program for the simpler diagrams and Dia and
Inkscape for more sophisticated stuff.
Be aware that Visio is like an elephant; a very different beast
depending on your perspective. It does flow charts, org charts,
network discovery and mapping, business rule processing, etc. It has
its own proprietary format, which even Visio has trouble reading at
times. The XML version of its format is somewhat more compatible, but
it's been catch-as-catch-can with interoperability with it, too.
So, what is it you'd like to do with Visio?

In the Linux world take a look at Dia. It is *not* as powerful as
Visio, but that's the closest I've seen for a desktop app so far.
Perhaps someone else can chime in with additional alternatives?

Mostly flowcharts, org-chart type stuff. We don't have a line of
documentation around here, a big change from Premier where EVERYTHING is
documented (except SQL table structures lol).
I played a little bit with Dia, wasn't thrilled but I was under the gun
time-wise and may not have given it enough time. Inkscape looks like a neat
graphics program, a little more than I need for charting though. I'll take
another look at Dia later this week.
Visio is a beast so I'm not expecting to find a full-featured replacement.
I've found that trying to chart some of the (not-so-wonderfully-written)
existing code I'm working with is a big help in understanding it (so I can
re-write it).

I was just looking into downloading OpenOffice - as that's what I have
use for Several years now. Thing is, I got a new PC setup here - and I
can't find any install files for OO. I started searching the web for it
