OK
I have a vonage box that is going up and down and leaving my mother without service for periods of time. I can try to teach her how to reboot the modem and router but I'm not at all confident she will do it.
So the Vonage box is actually a router which I can change settings in. I can route ports, set filters, etc...
The box sets itself up as 192.168.15.1 by default and is its own DCHP server. OF course the address scheme if I want to.
How do I ping that box from outside the network? I want to use a utility that tells me exactly when that router and/or the modem is off-line.
The Cable Modem is able to be pinged, but what about the router behind it?

I don't know anything about Vonage or your cable modem, but what I do with the local phone company in Las Vegas
(CenturyLink) is put their modem in bridge mode and then my router can be pinged.

The tech support from Vonage has been pretty weak so far.
According to the vonage router manual, just turning on the "Remote config management" function should allow me to remotely log into the box using port 8080 instead of 80.
Well that doesn't work and no one at Vonage has a clue how to make it work.
The Modem I am using is a straight-though modem with lets all traffic through.

Vonage probably has a dynamic IP address. Start a browser behind Vonage and go to www.whatismyip.com. That will give you
the web IP address at that time. You can then (probably) get to the Cable Modem using that address. If the Cable modem
is in bridge mode, you should be able to get to the Vonage modem with that address. ex: 65.44.22.4:8080 where 65.44.22.4
is your web IP address. Of course, a dynamic IP address is subject to change now and then. One of the support people in
our company works from home and has a Comcast cable modem. His dynamic IP address has not changed since Nov 2009 so it
all depends on the cable company and the neighborhood, how many people start/stop service, etc.

The IP address here is very dynamic. I use a company called redirectme.net which keeps track of dynamic ips as they change.
Running a ping monitor (EMCO Ping Monitor Free) I can see that the internet here goes down all the time. I don't know if it has something to do with the old cable wiring in this house, or whether the whole area is just unreliable.
