I've been sitting on this news for a while, and it's finally public: Rackspace is releasing its cloud source code under the Apache license. We're also partnering with NASA to develop the framework for creating the virtualization provisioning system that will power the next generation of Rackspace Cloud Servers and NASA's Nebula computing system. This new system, called OpenStack, is now available at http://openstack.org.
The main goal is two-fold: one, to help avoid lock-in, which is the primary reason companies are hesitant to move to the cloud, and two, to speed up development of the fundamental parts of the cloud fabric so that businesses can focus on the parts that differentiate them from their competitors.
I've flown to Texas twice in the past 3 weeks to work with the NASA team, and I have to say that I'm very excited by what's going on here. I think that this will jump-start the next generation of computing the way that the LAMP stack jump-started the internet 15 years ago.
Oh, and did I mention that this is all being done in Python? ;-)

Saw this on the wires over the last few days ... nice.

Yeah, and here's a much more incisive analysis than I could ever write:

You don’t want to differentiate on the basic compute, storage, and network offering. You want this to be as standard and interoperable as possible, just like 3G networks, TCP/IP, and similar service provider technologies. By creating a common open platform that everyone uses there is a better opportunity to facilitate wider adoption, create a competitive infrastructure service marketplace where providers work on differentiating in areas where they have an inherent advantage:
• Service and support
• Network & datacenter tie-ins (e.g. MPLS, hosting/co-lo)
• Bundled service offerings
• Differentiated value-added cloud services (VACS)
This is a game that all telcos and service providers understand. They have been playing it for the past 15+ years.

Does this mean you're no longer in San Antonio?

Any of it in Dabo?
I agree on the general coolness of all this.

Are you back in NY? Or are you just flying to Houston?

Yeah, I've been back in Rochester since December. I still have a small place in SA, but family issues required me to be back here most of the time.

No, cloud stuff is pure web, but I am creating a desktop client for Cloud Files in Dabo. There is a great tool available for Mac users, but nothing for Windows or Linux users, so I'm trying to fill that void. When it's ready I plan on adding it as an OpenStack project so that it could be generalized for any OpenStack storage server.

In NY. And the NASA folks are in California, not Houston. We had some tech discussions in SA a few weeks ago, and then the OpenStack summit last week in Austin.

Yeah, it's gotten some good buzz. We were talking about it last night
at the NH Ruby/Rails meeting. The presenter, Nick Plante, has a neat
web site just going into public beta, Mogotest.com, that's using all
the buzz terms, including Amazon Web services and Redis NOSQL and so
forth. They are very interesting in seeing the cloud services opening
up and becoming more standardized. The RackSpace OpenStack
announcement is a great move in that direction.
