A few weeks ago I scoffed at the value of touch screens for traditional
PCs.
After borrowing a colleagues iPad for a weekend, I have reversed my
opinion a 180 degrees.
I believe there's a big future for touch screen interfaces if the OS
provides a comfortable mapping of touch gestures to events as
implemented on the iPad.
True story: After spending a few hours on the iPad, I returned to my
regular laptop to do some work. I was so used to the touch screen
interface that I actually tried touching my monitor to get things done.
That sold me on how natural a well implemented touch screen interface
can be.
Another point: As great as a touch screen interface is, I don't see
touch screen's replacing keyboards. I'm not a fan of typing on touch
screens.

Stephen,
It's amazing how quickly you adapt to changing windows with a tap on the
screen instead of finding the mouse and selecting the window. The Alt-Tab
seems old and out dated. The mouse is still important for detail selection
and resizing a window is much easier with a mouse.
I got used to working on a test machine running Windows XP with a touch
screen. Put a different box under it and Windows Vista and Windows 7 have
the software built in. Problem is this touch screen doesn't work correctly.
It seems to be flipped on a diagonal axis. I ended up disconnecting the
ability since it no longer worked correctly on the new OS's.

I am not sure why the fuss over ipad. Touch screens have been about for ages
although multi touch not so long, Acer have had one, there is also another
ipad lookalike but better called joojoo. I plan on getting one but not apple
which is useless to me as a VFP programmer. The Acer is small and low res
but the dell looks promising. I think HP also have one but bargepoles comes
to mind.

Steve: I have a point of sale application and the touch screen is
awesome. The users use the touch screen for everything. They are
always tapping on the screen on their non-touch monitors. ;^) It
basically replaces the mouse so it works with everything.
