They announced this morning that there are 1,025 paid attendees at PyCon Atlanta, making it the largest PyCon ever. What's more, nearly 11% were women: while this sounds very small, if you've ever been to a tech conference, you;ll understand how remarkable that is.
Just goes to show that the whole notion that "in-person conferences are dead" simply isn't true.

Hi Kam,
Close to *who's* home? How about Tampa? I could ride my bike.
Now that I am 65 I get the senior rate (as in "free", often as not) at
vocational schools and community colleges so maybe . . .

Pete: Did you go to Atlanta? That's not *too* far from Tampa. I live
in Arizona. San Francisco would be great for me. I went to a
conference in Tampa a few years ago. It was very nice.

They do two-year stints at each location, so next year will be in Atlanta, too. But I have a strong suspicion that SF is the most likely location after that.

Hi Jeff,
I have been to Atlanta several times, but did not attend PyCon. I have
not enjoyed a deep tech background - only a couple classes - so I
struggle to understand the jargon at such gatherings. People get mad
when you ask what words mean.
Of course, if I start taking tech classes on the cheap/free with the
senior citizen policy, I might get up to speed.
The classes that interest me are in Tampa. Don't know if there is a
residency requirement or not. Looking into it, though.
Bike can make it in a little over an hour, runs about 60. Might be
faster with a smaller rider, but I am what I am (fat). Main benefit is
65+ miles per gallon.

I think that notion was created by biz types who just don't want to
spend the $$$ on going to a conference. Those who have attended a
conference realize how valuable it can be from many different angles.
