The number of OS vendors who assume you are a thief and require you to

prove otherwise vs. the number whio trust their customers to do the

right thing?

Common Ted, talk to me after you have had billions of your software pirated. Heck, talk to me after

you have had 100,000 pirated. It is not one bad apple, otherwise I doubt we would even be discussing

this. If you are not doing something wrong, then entering in 50 alphanumeric characters should be a

non-issue. While I hate copy protection as much as the next guy, I have had lots of my IP stolen and

copied, and flaunted in front of me. So I guess I am tainted the other way.

C'mon, Rick, tell me that you think that MS DRM stops anyone who wants

a cracked version of Windows. Get real. Anyone who wants one can find

one. DRM just hurts those who are trying to follow the rules, when the

vendor doesn't live up to their end of the bargain, or installs a

rootkit that causes problems, goes out of business, or decides they

don't want you doing what you're doing.

DRM is a bad technique that doesn't work.

I've also had my copywritten materials stolen.

What are you planning on doing, starting "Rick's Genuine Advantage?"

Hatred leads to the Dark Side.

I just can't see how Microsoft preventing legitimate users with legal

copies of MS software from installing their software helps you enforce

a copyright, licensing or contractual violation.

What are you going to do, lock up clients' data so they have to call

you for a password? Encrypt your program so it only runs on machines

you've approved in environments you allow? Don't plan on any

vacations. Don't let your cell phone battery run down. I don't want to

have to be that accessible. I know some members of the forums have

customers they believe they have to treat this way. I guess I am lucky

that I'm not in that situation (though I do know of people who are

running my code without the licensing fees everyone else pays -- I

hope they're enjoying their 5-year-old app). And I have brought former

clients to court over contractual violations. It's not pleasant.

But the attitude of punishing clients is not one that wins loyalty in

the end. MS can get away with in the arenas they are perceived as

monopolists.

I guess that when someone steals your stuff that you expect to be paid for

you want to prevent it from repeating in the future. I was told that my

used car app was being hawked by the snap on tool guy.

I adjusted the sign on process, added encryption and failed the customer

name when they hacked the encryption text. Granted that customer name was

on all contracts for selling the vehicle. I put it out with the probable

thief I had. It took effect 45 days later.

So if your committed to open source then fine. If your not, you should

protect yourself as best you can. I have decorative security doors on my

home to protect me from the bad people. Why not do the same with my

products out for sale?

Have you ever been a victim of a crime Ted? Someone break into your car,

home, apt, business, or your identity? When it happens to you don't think

that "It's alright." Sorry but you feel the opposite, or at least I did.

Yeah, I'll bet that sales will boom when people have to deal with

that to use his software!
