As many of you know, I have another life away from the keyboard as a
soccer referee. For the basic grade (i.e., you aren't working
professional games) there is no actual fitness test requirement, but
the tests are offered to everyone. The targets are based on your age
and on your grade, so for a 45+ guy who wants to move up to the next
level, I have to do the following things one after the other:
ââ¬Â¢ Run 1800m in 12 minutes. That's 4.5 times around a standard track.
ââ¬Â¢ Then run a 50m dash in 9.5 seconds
ââ¬Â¢ Then run a 200m dash in 40 seconds.
You get about a 3 minute break between each event while they
organize everyone, but that's about it. I timed myself well, and made
the 1800m with about 15 seconds to spare, and then did the 50m in
9.0, followed by the 200m in 38 sec. In other words, I made it!
It's humbling to watch the younger guys breeze through these tests,
but for an older guy like me with 3 knee operations, it's not easy at
all. But even though I probably won't be upgrading to the next level
any time soon, I've set passing this test as my goal to make sure
that I keep myself fit enough to stay healthy. Now that I'm back home
and showered, it's time to get some food and enjoy a nice cold
beverage to celebrate!

Ah exercise. In another life, back in the last century, I was an
exercisaholic. I would run 3.5 miles each Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and
lift weights on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. I only took Sunday off.
These days when I get the urge to do that, I sit down and wait til the urge
passes! Of course, back then, I had to stay fit so I could fight street
thugs. Today, I get them wirelessly!

Does building a stone retaining wall count as exercise for a 69 year old? I
can send a progress picture of it if you like. I don't think I can pass
though running tests however.

Congratulations! I wouldn't be able to do it (shit, I must begin
training again).

Why are you doing that? Are your stones about to start rolling? Let them
roll and put some grass.

Of course. But just like the way that US people think that they are
the only Americans, they also think that pointyball is the only
football. So I use 'soccer' since everyone knows what sport that is.

After going through multiple knee surgeries a few years ago, I was
afraid that I would never be able to pass the test, which is much,
much harder than keeping up with players in their 20s sprinting after
a through ball.

Ignorant sods! ;c)

I don't even have the excuse of a bad knee. Just too much work on my ass
and a certain lack of will.
As for the teen agers, I play defense so I just wait for them and use my
body (it's informal game, referees (when we have one) are not that picky).

Well, you're *supposed* to use your body. Too many people here who
aren't used to the sport think that it isn't a contact sport, and
start crying for a foul when little Johnny falls down. They just
don't understand that there are both legal and illegal ways to knock
someone down.

I like the Zinedine Zidane style. Dad always told me to use the head. ;c)
