Since I've been TIVO'ing for a long time, I seldom catch commercials
these days, but I happened to be watching live tv and caught (what I
assume is) a fairly new ad where the Mac & PC guy are talking about
Vista, with the Vista wheel of choices!
I laughed my head off, not so much because the ad was all that funny,
but rather, at how perfectly the ad captures the essence of what I
consider to be the "other" major Vista debacle. I stated a long time
ago what a completely moronic move it was to offer so many confusing
choices for Vista by MS, and I simply love the fact that the geniuses
doing the Mac marketing caught onto the situation and turned it into
yet another brilliant commercial bashing the pc. In fact, the entire
series of ads featuring these two guys has been absolutely brilliant
in my opinion, some of the smartest and most clever advertising done
in a long time.
Did anyone else see this Vista bashing ad and think it was as terrific as I do?
FWIW - I'm not a Mac guy, never owned one, and only very recently
considered doing so. I just happen to apprecaite all the 'valid'
points the Mac campaigns have been raising lately.

No, I can't - unless I agree to shove QT down my computers throat :)
If they want to get PC-users to buy a Mac (why else the campaign) -
why do they force you to install Quicktime (ie pretty much the M$-way
of doing things) instead of using AVI or MPG which every Windows-user
can watch directly?

I just wonder how effective these commercials are for Mac, though?
Sure, they're hilarious, but do they really have any other impact than
comedy?

I agree with Dan. I closed the page without installing the control.

We've been talking about the ads for several weeks now. Related to us
discussing the advertising, we've been lamenting what Vista means to
each of us.
Based on the above assumptions, I would say the advertisements are very
effective.

Certainly there's discussion, but how many of us (and others) have said
"Ok, given the way I feel after watching these Mac/PC commercials, I'm
going to buy a Mac now."

I think of advertising is more about raising the consciousness of a
product, and not a persuasion to purchase. (Think infomercial.)
I'd consider a Mac. OS-X is a very cool OS and the hardware ... sexy.
Car advertising is all about the (sorry for the barfy Vista reference)
"Wow" factor. Mac and PC advertising; same thing.

Among hard-core geeks? Probably never happen. But I'm sure it has an
effect on the casual user: the guy/gal who uses a Windows PC at work
and out of habit buys a Windows PC for home. I know of 4 families in
my neighborhood who have gotten tired of the malware problems, and
have gotten Macs for their families. I helped one guy who needed to
run a work-related Windows app set up Parallels Desktop, and now he
can run his Windows app side-by-side with Mac apps. Check out http://
www.parallels.com/products/coherence/ for how cool this is.

It's a factor. I rarely attend an Open Source meeting (LUG, FUDCon,
Python SIG) where I don't see at least one Mac.
